NEWCASTLE United reportedly could 'try to tempt' relegation candidates Saints with a January bid for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Ramsdale, 26, only signed for Saints in August last year and has made 14 appearances in all competitions, conceding 29 goals.

Despite that record, the former Arsenal man was instrumental in the club's only two clean sheets this season against Everton and Fulham.

Saints confirmed the signing of Ramsdale on deadline day and paid an initial fee of £18million, with £6million more in eventual add-ons.

A further £1million was due to be paid to the Gunners upon survival in the Premier League, although it looks as though that will not be required.

Saints are bottom of the Premier League with six points from 20 matches and England hopeful Ramsdale is unlikely to remain at the club in the Championship.

Several outlets have reported Newcastle's interest in Ramsdale but The Sun claim the Magpies could look to seduce Saints with a January move.

They add that the Geordies are in the market for a new shot-stopper and have also targeted England under-21 star James Trafford at Burnley.

The future of Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, 32, is uncertain but Burnley are said to be desperate to keep hold of 22 year old Trafford.

The report details that Ramsdale is 'highly likely' to leave Saints in the event of relegation and that this has put several clubs on 'red-alert' amid interest.

Would Saints consider a January exit for Ramsdale? Without a doubt, it would only be begrudgingly. His acquisition was seen as a major coup.

However, Ramsdale is likely one of several players up for sale in the summer if Saints need to recoup funds as a result of relegation from the Premier League.

New boss Ivan Juric has already said he wants to reduce the size of the squad this window but Ramsdale would not have come into his thinking there.
