Newcastle United make £95m move Alexander Isak will love as moment of genius spotted
Every man and his dog has waxed lyrical over Sandro Tonali's genius move to a new role in Newcastle United's midfield of late - but it is time to give Bruno Guimaraes his flowers after proving equally as impressive since enjoying extra freedom in Eddie Howe's in-form setup.
The Brazilian was once again involved throughout as the Magpies made it nine wins on the spin to move back into the Premier League's top four on Wednesday evening. Guimaraes helped himself to yet another assist in the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, revelling in a more attacking role than he has been accustomed to in recent seasons.
Both Howe and the St James' Park faithful have spent months pondering how Newcastle could get the most out of their superstar midfield duo - signed for combined £95m - upon Tonali's return from suspension. The Toon boss initially persisted with Guimaraes as the deepest and most central of the team's midfield three but has not looked back since moving the former Lyon man higher up the pitch as a right-sided number eight.

Guimaraes' eye for a killer pass, which was evident on Wednesday as he teed up Alexander Isak for his second goal of the game, and his positional awareness when pressing out of possession has helped him raise his levels significantly of late. That is now eight assists for the season in all competitions - more than any other Newcastle player - and a whopping five in his last seven games since the aforementioned positional adjustment.
The change in the middle of the park has no doubt helped Isak in recent weeks, with the Swede now just the fourth different player to find the net in eight successive Premier League matches. He will be absolutely loving having Bruno closer to him, impacting the game in the opposition's final third.
Isak will, understandably, grab the headlines as his goal run continues but the St James' Park crowd certainly noticed Bruno's genius role in Newcastle's second of the game in midweek. It was an eye of the needle pass from the 27-year-old, who picked the ball up on the edge of the box, took one touch to control it, one to get it out of his feet, one towards goal and then one to thread Isak in on goal, subsequently taking four Wolves stars out of the game and allowing Isak to finish calmly.
As the Toon stars headed back to the centre circle there was a typical roar to the crowd from the captain, with the Gallowgate Corner returning the favour with back-to-back chants of 'Bruno, Bruno' and 'We've got Bruno in the middle'.
"I think we've got everyone contributing at the moment," Howe said at full-time. "Bruno's playing his part with his creative passing, Alex is contributing goals, but you look at the midfield three today. Look at Sandro Tonali's contribution defensively to our win - it was massive."
Guimaraes has been a firm fan-favourite since he walked through the door on Tyneside in the club's first post-takeover transfer window. He is seemingly now getting even better in this new role as he begins to relish the armband and a new sense of freedom within this team.
Posting on social media after the game, Bruno said: "Great victory at home! Very happy with the team’s performance. You deserve it for the player and person you are, Isak. We keep pushing for more. See you on Saturday, Geordies"
