Newcastle United big transfer spend fully justified as class acts show their value once more
There are actually four things certain in life not three - death, taxes, Newcastle winning away, and Alexander Isak scoring. The port city of Southampton way down on England’s south coast inevitably became the scene of glorious redemption for Geordies. They are hopeless and United carry firepower.
The Mags gave them a goal start and still smacked them as they now do regularly to opponents on their travels. The roll call of honour has seen them win the last five times out of town against Ipswich, Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, and Southampton.
As sure as the moon follows the sun in our skies Isak notched another two. He is as hot as a vindaloo - 17 PL goals and five assists in 21 appearances, 19 goals in all competitions. Isak was the game changer turning a surprise 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead before another star performer Sandro Tonali deservedly notched a third.

If the Italian operates in the shadows of Europe's most lethal centre-forward then he is a class act in his own right. He is the great anticipator, a fire fighter defensively and a surging passer on the offence with a relentless motor. Big money was spent by United's standards on both Isak and Tonali but, my, was it money well spent.
I love this guy. I'll admit I was concerned during Sandro's 10-month isolation because he had not settled quickly, which was understandable with hindsight, but he used the time well to learn a new language and appreciate blanket full-on support from club and fans. What was a negative saw him emerge incredibly positive. Anthony Gordon isn't bad either, is he? When United do significantly spend, and they haven't done it for a while much to Toon frustration, then they inevitably get it right. Good people and good players.
However while the blue-eyed boys hog the headlines it must be admitted those who have truly resided on the dark side of the street like Martin Dubravka and Jacob Murphy have risen spectacularly to the challenge of keeping the boat afloat. They were supposed to be bench warmers not regular starters.
As we all knew the sinners of Southampton were the perfect opposition when coming off a shock four-goal beating at home to Bournemouth and sure enough the Geordies duly made it 10 victories in their last 11 times on the grass. Nevertheless having started on the front foot United unbelievably fell behind after 10 minutes through some sloppy defending. Should United fear the deadly hand of history intervening?
When Derby County officially became the PL's worst ever side finishing with a paltry 11 points in season 2007-08 they managed only one victory during the entire campaign . . . and that came against Newcastle. What is more Derby drew 2-2 in the return at SJP when it took an 87th-minute equaliser to prevent them from doing the double. So four of their 11 points came as a gift from us!
United's team was infamously beaten 1-0 at Pride Park with a front three of Michael Owen, Shola Ameobi and James Milner plus the likes of Steven Taylor, Steve Harper, Charles N'Zogbia, Alan Smith, and Nicky Butt. The stats fanatics were no doubt pointing out at a goal behind that the same club could provide a rare victory to a side threatening to top even Derby's humiliation but no, no way. Not for me. There were still 80 minutes to go, far too long for defenders as resolute as a chocolate teapot to keep a side of United's forward power at bay.
This was more like the Newcastle we know and love instead of the imposter who surrendered to what is admittedly a Bournemouth team on fire. Another three goals means the Mags have scored an incredible 35 times in their last 13 fixtures in league and cup competitions. That's an average of almost three an outing. Potent and powerful.
In case anyone suggests it could have been closer because a late Saints effort was belatedly ruled out by VAR - correctly I must add - then remember United also hit the post twice and had one cleared off the line. Now comes a capital challenge - Fulham and Arsenal at home in a matter of days to help foster the season's dreams.
