Newcastle United-linked Jonathan David is reportedly in advanced talks to join Barcelona in the summer.

The Magpies were in attendance to watch David during Lille's 2-1 Champions League defeat to Liverpool last month as they look to complete a free swoop in the summer. As reported on January 29 on Chronicle Live, David was the subject of a cheeky £10million bid, with Lille rejecting the offer out of hand.

David had already stated that he doesn't feel like a move mid-season would be the best idea for him. The forward said: "It’s not like the beginning of a season where you have a pre-season you get to know your team-mates, you have time to gel. In January, things are very hectic. It’s about right now. It’s tougher."

Although Newcastle, meanwhile, did not put any type of offer on the table given their Profitability and sustainability status, they now look set to miss out on his signature. TBR Football now reports that the Canada international is already in 'advanced talks' to join Barca on a free transfer once the season concludes.

David has several admirers in the Premier League, and it's said he received pre-contract offers from 'several' teams while 'multiple' were from the English top-flight. It's reported that Newcastle join Aston Villa, Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Juventus in the chase for his signature.

However, it seems that Barca are the ones close to finalising a deal. David has not hidden his dream to play for Barcelona and expressed his desire to move to the Nou Camp last year.

"[Barcelona] was always the team I grew up supporting. When you grow up supporting a team, it's a dream to play for them," he told The Athletic.

Since joining his Ligue 1 club in 2020, David has been a consistent performer, scoring an impressive 104 goals in 217 appearances.
