Newcastle United are set to reissue their famous Adidas grandad collar shirt next week.

The club have been teasing fans with repeats of the famous adverts from the German sportswear brand this week to build up anticipation for the relaunch. The shirt is famous with supporters - with many fans still donning the originals - due to its huge popularity between 1995 and 1997.

Worn by superstars like David Ginola, Les Ferdinand, Tino Asprilla and Alan Shearer there will be a fight on to land the retro tops on Tyneside. The shirts feature the famous Brown Ale sponsorship from back in the day too.

Back then the Magpies finished second in the Premier League for two seasons in a row, first under Kevin Keegan then under Kenny Dalglish. A club statement read: "A retro classic. Relaunched.

"The 95-97 Newcastle United adidas retro home shirt is back – nearly thirty years since The Entertainers ignited a black-and-white frenzy."

Chronicle Live revealed on May 8 last year that Newcastle were in talks with Adidas to bring the famous jersey back. Commercial chief Peter Silverstone told Chronicle Live back then: "Growing up, everybody is probably aware of the game-changing products and kits that Adidas designed for Newcastle United in the 1990s. Some of those designs will inform current kits. I guess all I can say is the 'bring back' of kits, which we did at my time at Arsenal for the first time with the bruised banana kit.

"That was incredibly successful from both a fan perspective but also a culture perspective. Some of these iconic kits are culturally relevant to all football fans. They are unique fashion items that happen to have been worn by David Ginola and Alan Shearer, the Entertainers, as well as Ant and Dec!

"They are iconic pieces and we are working with Adidas to try to bring them back."

With fans still wearing the original Adidas shirts now, and many of the items on sale on eBay for big money, Silverstone did not need to be reminded of the popularity of the kits.

Silverstone added: "They are so bespoke, there's no way you'd wear them on a pitch now. The grandad collar was thick and heavy on a pitch. You'd never get the players wearing them now because it wouldn't work for performance. So you have to find other ways to bring back those kits.

"It is now clearly a great opportunity for us and Adidas and again building global relevance and bringing back those products would be really exciting."

Newcastle launched a selection of retro-style tracksuits and long sleeved shirts earlier this season with great success. Indeed, the pieces were sold out with many fans having to turn to eBay to buy the items.

Club staff have been overwhelmed by orders and enquiries on both a new long sleeved retro shirt and an old school tracksuit which has been worn by Newcastle stars and assistant boss Jason Tindall. United have offered fans who join Mags+ a chance to get their hands on the shirts first.
