Newcastle United remain on the trail of Belgium winger Johan Bakayoko ahead of next summer's transfer window.

Toon scouts have been deployed into position around Europe and the Premier League as the Magpies start to seriously think about what the next trading period could look like. PSV Eindhoven star Bakayoko, who could cost £50million, is deemed as the ideal type of age to take his opportunity in Howe's adventurous team moving forward.

Newcastle have been joined by scouts from Liverpool on their trips to Holland to gather information on the PSV ace but there have been suggestions that Juventus have moved on from the winger. Bakayoko has 10 goals and three assists in 31 matches this season for PSV.

United are keen to add some more options to their right wing slot after losing Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United. Howe told Chronicle Live: "I have always said we have to do the work. So we have to prepare as if we can (sign players this month).

"That is the best way to be. We have done the work and we know what we potentially would do. We know what positions we would potentially recruit in. It's not for me to talk here.

"It is just so that everybody knows that the work has gone on. Otherwise, you lose track of the market and you lose track of players. You lose valuable knowledge that we may need in the future. We have done all the work we need."

Sporting director Paul Mitchell is using his contacts around Europe to ensure Newcastle get the best prices available given their PSR issues.

The 6ft 5in Bournemouth sensation is gathering plenty of interest from around the Premier League. The Dutchman was a bargain signing for the Cherries at £12.6m from Juventus last summer and has taken to the English game like a duck to water.

His obvious aerial advantage has been one of the cornerstones for success this season at Bournemouth but his reading of the game and passing skills make him the perfect package. Still just 19, Bournemouth are understandably keen to hold on to his services for a bit longer.

However, he has a £55m release clause in his deal that has alerted Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool. With Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles' contracts up at the end of the season, the Spain Under-21 centre-back, who is deemed comfortable on the left or the right-hand side of central defence, would be a dream signing.

The tall centre-back classes himself as Spanish after leaving Holland at a young age hence why he is eligible to play for the current European champions.

A couple of claims in the capital have suggested that Newcastle have taken a look at the 27-year-old from Crystal Palace. Mateta, who gunned United down last April in a 2-0 win at Selhurst Park for the Eagles, is contracted until 2027 at Palace.

After 32 goals in 63 starts, he is proven Premier League quality these days and would be deemed a slightly cheaper alternative to some targets at around £20m.
