Newcastle United could use simple PSR hack in January with exit door open for long serving star

Newcastle United will not stand in Martin Dubravka's way if he finds a club in the January window - regardless of whether they bring in the man deemed as the club's next number 1.

Part of Newcastle's long-term recruitment strategy is finding a younger star who will gradually replace Nick Pope. However, United chiefs are currently delighted with the 32-year-old and feel that he still has plenty to offer the Magpies in the next few years.

Burnley's James Trafford is high on Newcastle's wish-list and the Clarets will be open to selling him if the price is right but want to make a profit on the £15million they paid for him in summer 2023. A keeper is not the priority this winter but that would not mean Newcastle will fight to keep 35-year-old Dubravka.

With Odysseas Vlachodimos waiting in reserve and Newcastle also having former England international John Ruddy available, they have plenty of cover to go with squad keeper Mark Gillespie. The Magpies got Ruddy on a free transfer from Birmingham City and handed him a deal of around £8,000 per week, which has proved shrewd business as cover for Pope and Vlachodimos.

Dubravka's only appearance this season was against AFC Wimbledon, when he picked up an injury in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win before being replaced by the Greek international. With Saudi Pro League clubs alerted to his situation and a clutch of European sides also in need of a new stopper, Dubravka could be a sought-after figure in the winter window.

Dubravka was irked last summer when Newcastle made the move to sign Vlachodimos and Ruddy while he was on duty with Slovakia at the European Championships in Germany. He said then: "What is the plan for me? What is my future? I don’t know if they want me to stay or not."

Only last season, he made 34 appearances for club and country, with Pope dislocating his shoulder at Newcastle. That offered Dubravka a clear pathway to the first team, but with Pope fit again and in form, he could see the winter trading period as the ideal time to leave.

Newcastle will take any PSR boosts they can get as they look to reassess the squad in the next few weeks. Dubravka could leave on a free transfer this summer as his contract expires, meaning this would be the last time for Newcastle to cash in.
