It continues to be a month rife with speculation at Newcastle United, though it remains very quiet in terms of incoming transfers. That's in part down to the Magpies needing to sell before they can strengthen Eddie Howe's squad this month, with the January transfer window a notoriously difficult month to do business.

The Toon boss is not expecting any major developments this month as things stand, but that could all change between now and the end of the window.

Newcastle have been linked with a number of defensive reinforcements, while fringe players continue to be linked with the exit door. ChronicleLive has taken a look at all the latest Newcastle United news and transfer rumours.

Aston Villa 'ahead of Newcastle' in move for Sevilla defender

Various reports in Spain claim Newcastle United, Liverpool and Aston Villa are keen on signing Sevilla defender Loic Bade this month with Unai Emery's side looking to steal a march. Diario de Sevilla claim Aston Villa officials Monchi and Damian Vidagany’s most recent trip to Seville was an attempt to sign the defender, but they're looking to offload Diego Carlos before making a move.

Liverpool and Newcastle have both been credited with an interest in Bade over the past few weeks, but it's Villa who appear to be in pole position, according to L'Equipe and ABC Sevilla.

The 24-year-old is valued in the region of €25million (£21million) according to transfermarkt, though various other reports claim the La Liga club could demand a fee in excess of £40million.

Almiron 'close to leaving' St. James' Park

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron is reportedly edging closer to a January transfer away from St. James' Park. That's according to the Telegraph who claim the Magpies have been in talks with numerous clubs about a transfer this month.

Though a fee has not yet been agreed with interested parties, Eddie Howe's side have slapped a reported £12million asking price on Almiron, with clubs in the United States, Europe and Brazil said to be interested in his services.

The report claims clubs are unwilling to pay that fee for the 30-year-old while the player's wage demands have been a sticking point in negotiations. A sale of Almiron would give Newcastle more room to manoeuvre in their own quest to strengthen their squad with the Magpies not at risk of breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules for this accounting period.
