Newcastle United learn Marc Guehi 'negotiations' truth after Tottenham bid
Crystal Palace made it clear to Spurs that there was 'no chance' of the Londoners signing Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day.
Crystal Palace turned down offers from Newcastle United for Guehi last summer and the Eagles rejected another huge bid from Spurs earlier this month. Although Guehi has just a year-and-a-half left on his contract, Crystal Palace stood firm in the final throes of the window as boss Oliver Glasner explained.
"It was clear in our situation that we can't sell a player on deadline day because we can't find a replacement within a few hours," he told reporters. "It's just not possible.

"Credit to the chairman [Steve Parish] that they were not really in negotiations. He explained to them pretty soon that there was no chance because of our situation and Crystal Palace always has to be number one in all the considerations.
"It was clear we could not sell Marc because we could not get the replacement. We lost Trevoh Chalobah. We lost Chadi [Riad] due to injury. It was just not possible to sell Marc."
Newcastle made a series of big-money offers for Guehi last summer, but the Magpies ultimately stopped bidding several weeks before the window shut after Crystal Palace's demands went beyond the club's limits. It is worth noting that Newcastle would have potentially had to sanction a number of departures before the end of the current financial year in June if the England international had arrived.
Newcastle scrambled to raise funds at the 11th hour to avoid a PSR breach last year and senior figures at the club have repeatedly stressed they do not want to find themselves in that situation again.
