Alan Shearer has called for a 'dramatic' change to the Premier League's financial rules because the current regulations 'don't sit easy' with the Newcastle United legend.

Clubs are currently trialling squad cost rules and top to bottom anchoring in shadow, but top-flight sides remain restricted to losses of £105m over a rolling three-year period. Aston Villa failed in a bid to increase this limit to £135m last summer after Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan was among those executives who 'did not see the sense' in agreeing to that.

Aston Villa and Newcastle, of course, have been among those sides who have actually been able to disrupt the established order after Leicester City were previously the only club to do so between 2006 and 2022. It is one thing finishing in the top four, though; it is quite another staying up there when other clubs have far superior revenues and the capacity to have deeper squads. That's why Shearer wants to 'dramatically change' the rules.

"Nottingham Forest have come in and they have challenged the big boys," the Premier League's record goalscorer told the Rest is Football. "Over recent seasons, we have seen Newcastle do that and disappear. We have seen Aston Villa do that and they're now eighth.

"Would that happen to Forest? Would they be able to go on and spend again? Look at where Bournemouth are and what they are doing. I've always said the way they are at the minute doesn't sit easy with me because it's not designed for anyone to come in and challenge the big boys. You might do it for one season but, after that, you're not able to do it."
