Newcastle United are reportedly monitoring Jack Grealish and the player's situation at Manchester City should the England international become available.

Grealish, 29, is just over halfway through the six-year contract he signed when joining the reigning Premier League champions from Aston Villa for a £100million British transfer record fee in the summer of 2021. However, the attacking midfielder has started just six league matches this season for City.

One was against Newcastle at St James' Park in late September, when the winger assisted Josko Gvardiol for the visitors' opening goal. However, that is Grealish's only league assist this season, with the only other coming four days prior in their League Cup third round tie with Watford of the Championship.

The Mail claims he could leave City in the winter transfer window this January despite manager Pep Guardiola acknowledging they are not anticipating any departures. Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur are two clubs reportedly monitoring Grealish's situation at the Etihad Stadium.

These reports come after Troy Deeney told talkSPORT that joining Newcastle would be considered a "massive step down". Discussing teams who Grealish could join, the former Watford striker said: "Spurs, he walks into that team in every position, easy, whether that's as a winger, number ten or number eight.

Tottenham tried to sign Grealish in the summer of 2018 after Villa missed out on promotion back to the Premier League. They bid £25million after initially coming in as low as £15million, but Villa wanted £40million.

Deeney continued: "Newcastle, easy. There are loads of teams. Anyone outside the top four he would easily go into and dominate.

"If he went to Newcastle, it would be considered a massive step down for him, but it's a great club with a great fanbase. And Jack needs to feel that again, that he's loved, that the fanbase loves him, and that he's the man to drive them forward."
