Newcastle United got themselves back on track with a solid away performance at rock bottom Southampton.

The Magpies suffered a shock in the opening stages as the rock-bottom Premier League club nudged ahead after Jan Bednarek's flying header after 10 minutes. Joe Aribo's challenge on Alexander Isak on 24 minutes resulted in a VAR check coming to the conclusion Newcastle had earned a spot-kick.

Isak calmly stepped up to send Alex McCarthy to make it 1-1 and was soon celebrating a second on the half-hour mark. Jacob Murphy played in the Sweden star before he danced into the danger zone and slammed the ball off the post to fire his side ahead.

It was 3-1 six minutes into the second half after Isak linked up with Anthony Gordon who helped the ball into Sandro Tonali's path before he kept his composure and slipped it past the keeper to extend the lead.

Here's how the Magpies rated overall on the South Coast:

Martin Dubravka 7

Rooted to the spot for the opening goal but made some key stops after that. Not least a superb save from Taylor Haywood-Bellis' vicious overhead kick.

Tino Livramento 7

Did what he needed to. A tough start but got through it.

Fabian Schar 6

A slow start to the game and aside from having a hand in the third goal put in an average display.

Dan Burn 7

Got over an early setback with a gutsy performance.

Lewis Hall 8

Popped the ball around all day. A big threat and could have had a penalty.

Joelinton 7

Strong in the tackle and made vital interceptions but wasted chances to make this even more comfortable.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

Didn't have his best afternoon. No surprise to see his number come up. Judging by his expression, neither was he.

Sandro Tonali 10

A champagne performance from the Italy star. A hand in one goal then made an opportunity for himself to score the third. Rolled the ball around for fun and was sharp in the tackle.

Jacob Murphy 8

A constant threat to the home defence. One assist and unfortunate to hit the post.

Anthony Gordon 8

Came alive after the break. Brought others into play - not least Tonali.

Alexander Isak 9

One of the hottest strikers in Europe right now. Where would Newcastle be without him?
