Newcastle United slipped to a 4-1 defeat against AFC Bournemouth at St James' Park on a day when performance levels dipped.

The Magpies had fell behind with just six minutes played as Antoine Semenyo set up Justin Kluivert for his first goal as he arrived in the box unmarked to score early. Bruno Guimaraes flicked home a headed equaliser from Lewis Hall's corner on 25 minutes but Newcastle would go in behind at the break.

Bruno lost the ball to allow Ryan Christie and Dango Ouattara to slip in Kluivert to fire home his second on 44 minutes. Kluivert's stoppage time rocket ensured he left with the match ball. Milos Kerkez was allowed the freedom of St James' Park and easily breezed past Trippier before lashing home a fourth.

Here's how the players rated overall:

Martin Dubravka 6

Under constant pressure and made some key stops. But beaten twice in the first half.

Tino Livramento 4

His day did not improve after Semenyo steamed past him in the opening stages.

Sven Botman 6

Picked on merit over Schar but the Swiss star was on at the first opportunity after a sleepy half from the Dutchman. Perhaps this was one game too many after just returning from a knee injury?

Dan Burn 6

A steady presence with a host of routine clearances.

Lewis Hall 5

Grabbed an assist but was in all kinds of trouble defensively. A dip by his high standards and taken off before the end.

Joelinton 5

Seemed to lose focus before the break after smashing into Kluivert. Not his best afternoon.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

A mixed bag with the equaliser but then lost ball for second Bournemouth goal.

Sandro Tonali 5

Another who may have slipped into the 'one game too many' category. Did not have same impact as recent winning run.

Jacob Murphy 4

Switched off for the opener and did not look at it. Did not manage an accurate cross and was replaced with 25 minutes left to nobody's surprise.

Anthony Gordon 6

At least offered a threat but nothing fell his way. Miserable day capped by losing the ball for third Kluivert goal.

Alexander Isak 4

Looked isolated but by the same token also didn't make anything happen either. Late free-kick was only attempt and that hit the wall.

Subs

Fabian Schar 4 (for Botman 46)

Kieran Trippier 3 (for Hall 65)

Joe Willock 6 (for Murphy 65)

William Osula (for Bruno 90)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark.
