Newcastle United turned down a cash bid for Kieran Trippier after Eddie Howe's wish was granted on the former England full-back.

The defender has been attracting interest throughout the January window and Howe still had the hurdle of the Turkish transfer window to clear in the last few days. But after Galatasaray could only conjure up a paltry £2.5million offer the deal was rejected out of hand by the Magpies.

With injuries slicing into Howe's squad in recent days, the Magpies fielded a roster that was one player light to the Premier League on Friday. Departures for Lloyd Kelly to Juventus and Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United meant that Howe was able to hold on to 34-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur star Trippier.

The Bury-born player was drafted back into Howe's starting line-up for the Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal after playing second fiddle to Tino Livarmento for much of the season. But Chronicle Live understands Howe was under no pressure to sell Trippier to the Turkish giants after offloading two players in the winter window.

Despite not being able to bring in new faces, Newcastle are in no danger of PSR problems or points deductions going into June's PSR health check deadline from the Premier League. Howe had said last week: "Yeah, no part of us wanted to lose Kieran. He’s had a difficult season and not so much on the pitch.

"He’s had a couple of fitness issues that just halted his progress. He then came back into the team and had a really good couple of performances around Christmas time and showed his qualities again having not played a lot of football."

And Howe's request to hold on to Trippier was realised earlier today as a late offer from the Istanbul club was knocked back. The ex-Man City youth star was also offered a lucrative three-year contract.

The Turkish transfer window closed today (February 11), more than a week after the rest of Europe.
