Newcastle United have agreed a temporary exit for Norwegian midfielder Travis Hernes.

The 19-year-old - who arrived from Shrewsbury Town in 2023 - made his debut for Newcastle on the post-season tour to Australia last year. Hernes played in clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Melbourne Cricket Ground on a night in which the Magpies won on penalities in an exhibition game.

This season though Hernes has been unable to venture beyond the Under-21 team and it has been decided by Eddie Howe and loan manager Shola Ameobi he needs first-team action.

A Newcastle statement read: "Newcastle United youngster Travis Hernes has joined Danish side Aalborg BK on loan for the remainder of the season, subject to work permit approval.

"The 19-year-old midfielder, who represents Norway at youth level, featured for the first\u0002team during last year’s post-season trip to Australia and has been a regular fixture for the under-21s so far this term.

"Hernes joined the club in September 2023 from Shrewsbury Town, where he made his senior debut, and was involved in Eddie Howe’s matchday squad for trips to Aston Villa and Fulham last season.

"Hernes now heads to the Danish top-flight to join an Aalborg side currently sitting ninth in the Superliga. Everyone at the club wishes Travis well for his time on loan in Denmark."

Hernes captained the reserve team earlier in the season and in the summer, after a friendly against South Shields, he said: "As captain, I was very pleased to lead the boys out today. It's a great responsibility to be a captain and it felt great. It was my first time being captain but I really liked it and I enjoy that side of being a leader out on the pitch."

Now he must show it in the Denmark's Superliga where Howe will be keeping tabs on him from afar.
