Former England winger Joe Cole believes Erling Haaland's new contract with Manchester City will cause issues for Newcastle United in the future. The Norwegian striker penned a nine-and-a-half year deal to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2034 which has, reportedly, got rid of a number of contract release clauses in his previous deal with the Premier League champions.

It makes it difficult for clubs interested in striking a deal for Haaland in the future, with Cole now believing it spells danger for the Magpies and Alexander Isak. The in-form Swedish frontman had scored in each of his last eight consecutive games prior to the clash with Bournemouth, helping lift Newcastle into Champions League contention.

The Toon forward, who has scored 17 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions so far this season - making him one of the most sought-after strikers in world football. Ex-West Ham and Chelsea winger Cole was full for praise for Isak, but warned Newcastle they must win silverware if they want to fend off any potential suitors.

Speaking on TNT Sports before the clash vs Bournemouth, Cole said: "I think his all-round game, he's a footballer first and goalscorer second. That's why he's so impressive. When they spent £60m on him at Newcastle, he didn't blow the doors off the place when they signed a big name.

"People were asking; 'Is he or isn't he [a big name]?' He's just got better, and better, and better,

"Now, he's the most sought-after striker, especially now Haaland has signed that 10-year deal. There'll be a lot of suitors looking at Isak, unfortunately for Newcastle.

"He's in that company and I really believe so. I'd take Haaland over him just, but there's not much in it. That's the biggest credit you can say to him. I think so many clubs, I'm thinking Arsenal, even Chelsea although Jackson has come good, Lewandowski at Barcelona is getting on."

Cole added: "There's a lot of big, big clubs looking for centre forwards. I'm not saying Newcastle aren't a big club but, as a player, you've got a short amount of time to win trophies.

"For this club, it's crucial that they're up there competing and they get Champions League football. Maybe even silverware - dare I say it in the Carabao Cup - to keep players like Isak and make him feel like this place is going to do it finally."
