Newcastle United sent clear Lloyd Kelly transfer message after Jose Mourinho bid
Newcastle United are fending off a bid by Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce to lure Lloyd Kelly to Turkey - but some Chronicle Live readers in our comments section reckon that Kelly still has a part to play for the Magpies, whether it's now or in the future.
Newcastle's position is that they don't have to sell the summer signing in the January transfer window, and that Fenerbahce's offer falls short of their valuation. Kelly is valued at around £15 million with a contract that runs until 2029, so there is no pressure to make a sale until the club feel that the timing and reason is right, such as PSR concerns.
Kelly arrived on a free transfer last summer, and is reported to be on £150,000 per week. He has yet to prove his case to start over established defenders like Dan Burn or Sven Botman in important games, playing just 298 Premier League minutes, but has played cup games.

Fenerbahce vice president and Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has gone public with the bid for Kelly. Speaking to Fenerbahce's official media channels, Ilicali was quick to express his club's desire to sign Kelly this winter. He said: "We are in talks for a Lloyd Kelly transfer. He’s a player we’re interested in. If we can reach an agreement, we will transfer this player."
Some fans have no great attachment to Kelly just yet. Reader Paultaxi writes: “Sell Kelly, we got him on a free, £150,000 a week, and doesn't get a game. Take the £15 million and save his wages.”
TonyTheTaxiDriver agrees: “Why don't we just let Kelly go? Surely any fee we get is decent when you balance getting his huge wage off the books? He looks way short of what we need, and especially on those wages.”
Ian692017 says: “Sell Kelly, cost nothing so it's money in the bank. Doesn't look that confident anyway. Would keep Targett as back up for Hall, but he is on a big wage.”
Others think Kelly is worth keeping around, even if his time isn't now. Jollydxb writes: “A loan until end of season would benefit all parties. Kelly gets some much needed game time and continental experience, and Fenerbahce contribute a percentage of his wages... next season he could be a possible starter.
"Kelly is one to keep and is at the right age to develop further. Both Schar and Burn are getting into their twilight years and the Premier League pace will catch up with them. Kelly is uber fast, good on the ball and a threat from set pieces. He just needs regular game time to boost his confidence, he could be a regular starter next season.”
