Newcastle United set Premier League challenge as Magpies look forward to Wembley
Newcastle United are off to Wembley in March, having thoroughly beaten Arsenal over two Carabao Cup semi-final legs and proving that they have the chops to pursue silverware - and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section have set the squad the challenge of repeating their imperious performances in the Premier League.
Eddie Howe made the right calls to beat the Gunners 2-0 again at home, switching to a five-man defence and providing plenty of attacking threat. Jacob Murphy continued his renaissance in the Newcastle squad by opening the scoring, and Anthony Gordon provided a second with no response from the visitors.
Howe was delighted with the progression, saying: "We were always going to play the same way. We were brave, aggressive, everything we wanted to be. We haven't gone there yet [talking of the final]. Just very pleased to have got through this tie. Physically I thought we were much better this evening. A really good performance."

Fans want to see this Newcastle in every game. Reader Toontoonblackandwhitearmy says: “Newcastle were unstoppable, sublime in every position. Made the Gunners look clueless, to be fair, they were, they had no answers anywhere on the pitch.
"BUT, and it's a BIG but, is if we can produce that quality of play against a top team, why the heck do we lose at home to the likes of Bournemouth and Fulham? Their inconsistency is their downfall. Only by stopping losing games like that will they become the top team we all deserve.”
Commenter BigMan2022 agrees: “Great result! Proved that those recent home losses were purely psychological. If we played like this against Fulham or Bournemouth the result would have been very different. When we are up for it, we can beat most teams in the PL. I may even go as far as to say that this cup is ours as long as we maintain the attitude. Who wants it more than us?! Come on!”
Elsewhere, Jacob Murphy and Kieran Trippier both received plaudits for their performances. BrightToonFuture says: “Once again hats of to Murph. His reaction and finish to score the crucial goal was class. So important after the Isak goal was chalked off for offside, and then hitting the post.”
Robin85 writes: “Thought Trippier was excellent tonight. Right into them. Another goal for Murphy as well. Playing out his skin. Great night.”
Morpeth1 says: “Anthony Gordon was unplayable tonight, great team performance and hats off to Eddie Howe for bringing Trippier back as he was superb. Whole team were a 7 rating and above.”
Lying Boris writes: “I hope this will shut up - for a while at least - those of our fans who constantly whine that Eddie has no Plan B. His fluid 5 at the back, with Schär able to join in attacks, was a masterstroke. Well done to the team, the staff, and our incredible fans.”
