Newcastle United shrewd £50m transfer deadline day push that won't be repeated
Quiet Newcastle United deadline days? We're getting used to them on Tyneside. However, this time around there will be no 11th hour Magpies bid - out of the blue - for a top talent.
Back in the summer, as the window neared its end, it was a late push for Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga that got hopes up - albeit temporarily - of late activity for Eddie Howe's side. That transfer interest has proved shrewd.
Since Newcastle's failed £50m bid, the Swedish attacker has gone from strength to strength and is now proving a key player for a high-flying Forest side. Elanga helped himself to a hat-trick of assists on Saturday as Nuno Espirito Santo's side stuck seven beyond Brighton, with the wide man taking his tally of goal involvements to 11 in all competitions this term.

The former Manchester United winger is also taking on more responsibility with set piece duties and a starting role in the Champions League-chasing outfit.
“It is clear you can see that Newcastle United are interested [in signing me]," Elanga told Fotboll Skanalen in the weeks after Newcastle's summer push. “It means that I’m playing good football, when a big club shows interest.
“However, Nottingham Forest is also a big club. They have won two Champions Leagues, even though it was before I was born… but I am happy in Nottingham and have a contract there. I am focusing on Nottingham Forest and I hope to have a good season, then we will see what happens."
Elanga added: “Alexander Isak talked to me about it. However, I said the same to him, as I say to you. We have a good relationship and good chemistry when we play together [for Sweden] but I have a contract with Nottingham Forest…"
Newcastle's need for a goalscoring right-winger was evident then and is even more pressing to this day given Miguel Almiron's recent exit. The Magpies' last-gasp push for Elanga in the summer always looked like a long shot and was swiftly shot down by the City Ground outfit, who would have struggled to find a replacement in time.
This time around Newcastle find themselves in a different position. After selling Almiron and Lloyd Kelly, there is an understanding that they are better served keeping their powder dry as opposed to spending now and suffering potential consequences later.
With more financial headroom in the summer, sporting director Paul Mitchell - and Howe - will likely revive long-term interest in previous targets to bolster the dressing room ahead of the new campaign. Spending now, however, could lead to unwanted and unpopular sales of star men before June 30 - something which Newcastle are, naturally, keen to avoid.
All that leads to a deadline day where young outgoings are the only likely business on Tyneside. That, subsequently, means patience is needed ahead of what could prove to be an exciting summer.
