Newcastle United are set to stick to their guns in the last 24 hours of the transfer window - despite agreeing a deal to move Lloyd Kelly on to Juventus.

Toon head coach Eddie Howe was adamant that defeat against Fulham plus the exit of Miguel Almiron to Atlanta United would not see a change in stance in the transfer market from the powers that be. And that message has been repeated to us today in the aftermath of Kelly's departure on Sunday as the ex-Bournemouth man heads over to Turin following a medical.

His exit will definitely be a loan move first with an obligation for Juve to buy later this year. But Chronicle Live has been told that it is highly unlikely that it will see new funds released.

Just like last year's barren January, Newcastle are set to plough on with the squad they have despite considering a range of loan deals in the past month. The tight PSR rules mean that United are restricted in terms of spending until after June 30 next year.

Howe said last night: “There’s nothing we can do. The window will be what it is and results won’t change that."

Howe then added: "It’s very difficult because I think in that moment, we don’t have a huge array of choices from the bench. You’re thinking, ‘Let’s change something tactically or personnel wise’, but we weren’t 100 per cent sure that any change at that moment would make us stronger.

"I was hoping we would just find a way individually to get back into that second half. It took the equaliser for us to do that. We were okay for a while after that, and if we had scored a second goal in that moment, I think we would have won the game. But it wasn’t to be."

Newcastle are now down to the bare bones in terms of centre-backs with Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Sven Botman available at the moment. But Jamaal Lascelles won't return until next month and Alex Murphy is on loan at Bolton Wanderers.
