Newcastle United star lifts lid on exciting change of transfer policy at St James' Park

Dan Burn has hailed Newcastle United's recruitment policy with the Toon star believing Eddie Howe landed two of the game's brightest young full-backs last summer in Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.

Burn has noted a change in the club's transfer policy since the Blyth lad himself was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 alongside another senior star Kieran Trippier. The 6ft 7in defender feels that the club is changing the approach on transfers and that the brief is changing compared to when he was recruited to help save the club from relegation.

Burn said: "The way we have recruited players in the last few years, we’ve moved away from when they recruited me, Tripps, Woody which were players over 30 to now looking towards the future. Big hats off to them for doing that."

The club's stance has given both Livramento and Hall the chance to flourish in the first-team but also kick on and win England call-ups, with Hall the Three Lions' latest cap. Burn spoke of his admiration for the duo and said: "They’ve got all the chance they need, there’s probably not two fullbacks playing better than what they are at the moment."

Since Hall was bedded gradually into the team at St James' Park he has came on leaps and bounds. The Newcastle star feels that is testament to Eddie Howe's day to day coaching work with younger players.

Burn said: "Lewis has been brilliant. I’ve always said about Lewis it’s just about a run of games. When people sign here they expect that they’ll go into team straight away but the way that we play it takes a while to build into that, to know your roles and for the team to click and work.

"You probably saw it with Anthony Gordon when he came in, Sandro Tonali as well a little bit. I’m really happy for him. I try to help him where I can but he’s been on fire and he deserves all the plaudits he gets.”
