Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron becomes priority target as unusual transfer rule explained
Interest in Miguel Almiron continues to grow as Newcastle United ponder whether to cash in on the Paraguayan in the January window. The 30-year-old winger is one of just a few sellable options for the Magpies, who continue to stress that they must sell before they can buy.
MLS side Charlotte FC were keen in the summer and that interest doesn't appear to have gone anywhere. Reports just this week suggest the North American outfit currently hold the 'discovery rights' for Almiron's signature next month.
An unusual rule, designed to prevent teams competing for players and subsequently causing transfer fees and wage demands to rise during a bidding war. After nabbing the rights to Almiron, as per reports, Charlotte are now the only MLS team that can negotiate with the player.

This, despite Toronto FC also eyeing a move for the former Atlanta United star. Should Almiron snub a Charlotte switch in the future, Toronto or any other MLS side can negotiate a deal to land his discovery rights.
MLS rules state a team can offer '$50,000 [£39,700] in General Allocation Money in exchange for the right to sign the player'. A club may have up to five players on its Discovery List at any time and may remove or add players at any time
Whether Charlotte, or any other MLS side, will be able to tempt Newcastle into selling remains to be seen. After all, the record incoming transfer fee in MLS history stands at $16million [£12.5million] and Charlotte themselves have a transfer record of just $8million [£6.25million] after signing Celtic star Liel Abada earlier this year.
Speaking about Almiron's future this week, the player's agent suggested he would prefer to stay in Europe rather than jet back to the United states.
“Newcastle changed the sporting direction of the club and there is no urgency to sell, if there are possibilities, we will see. He went through many cycles at the club and he is an idol,” Campos continued on La Union.
“Miguel knows that if there is something, we will listen to him. It was the same coach who kept him when there were proposals, Newcastle are asking a high value for him.
"Miguel wants to stay in Europe, he succeeded there, he has more than 230 games in the Premier League. Everyone wants to get there, he had the opportunity, and he knows how difficult it is.”
