Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has told his wounded Toon stars not to take things for granted in the build up to rock bottom Southampton next weekend.

The Saints sit bottom of the table with former Croatia boss Ivan Juric tasked with the near impossible job of securing Premier League status on the South Coast. But Howe has already watched a video of the Saints' 3-1 loss at Manchester United where Juric's team dominated for an hour before being beaten by Amad Diallo's hat-trick at the Stretford End.

As Newcastle look to bounce back quickly, Howe agreed that nothing could be taken for granted ahead of next weekend's long journey to St Mary's. Speaking after the 4-1 loss to the Cherries, Howe was cautious about the task in hand.

Howe, who tried to change things up with a raft of changes, said: "No, absolutely not (take three points for granted). I say that consistently. I watched the Southampton game yesterday, and they were excellent.

"You're never under any illusions wherever you go in the Premier League. Whoever you play against, the standard is very, very high."

However, despite the heavy home defeat, Howe was determined to use the experience positively. The former AFC Bournemouth manager said: "We'd like to think in a few weeks, we'll look back at this moment and think it was not necessarily a good thing, but helped us in the long run to appreciate everything that we've delivered in recent weeks. I think that's the way to look at it."
