Newcastle United's opponents have been confirmed for a showpiece Carabao Cup final in March, as Liverpool thumped Tottenham Hotspur in their semi-final second leg - and some fans in the Chronicle Live comments section say that this is the perfect opportunity to winning some silverware.

The Magpies dispatched Arsenal with ease over two legs, finishing with an aggregate 4-0 scoreline, and will go into the final seeking to right the wrongs of 2023's loss to Manchester United and end a trophy drought going back generations. Meanwhile, Liverpool will be looking to retain the trophy having won the competition last season, claiming their 11th League Cup title and the first piece of silverware under Arne Slot.

Liverpool overturned a 1-0 defeat in their first leg by putting four past Tottenham's injury-struck, patchwork team. In a poll of two thousand readers, 86 per cent of voters would rather have faced Spurs, but Newcastle will face the current Premier League leaders instead.

The clash with the Reds will be as tough a game as any in world football on current form, but some fans say this is the perfect time to go all-out for silverware. Reader Paranoidandroid says: “In some ways meeting Liverpool in the final might take the pressure off Newcastle.

"The TV commentators are talking like Liverpool have already won, and we are obviously considered an underdog team that don't have much hope against the mighty Liverpool. All the weight of expectations on them, not much on us! Let's get down there and upset their little apple cart!”

Commenter Terrymcdine writes: “I was actually hoping it would be Liverpool. We have beaten Spurs twice and it is unusual for a team to beat another team three times in one season. This season we have won at Manchester United and Arsenal for the first time in years, and I think we are due a win against Liverpool.”

Magpiekenscotland says: “On our day we can beat anyone, but let's not get carried away. Liverpool are the best team in the league so its not going to be easy.”

Tony1971 is buzzing: “Come on fellas do us proud, give us a trophy aha! We are having a really good season playing some excellent football, yes we have had some pretty poor games too, but on the whole this team is very impressive! So without asking too much, can we finish the season in the top four & taking the Carabao Cup & FA Cup please?”

Petrus writes: “Playing Liverpool twice over a couple of weeks and keeping injury free is hard ask. Keeping the first team fit is the only chance Newcastle has, this is where the reality of the squad comes in, and what has been concerning fans throughout the transfer window. Whilst Liverpool have an abundance of players to choose from. The fans and team will be up for it, HWTL.”
