Newcastle United are believed to have run the rule over Celtic right wing star Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn. The move comes amid the Magpies' hunt for attacking reinforcements.

The former Germany Under-20 star has been in sparkling form this season for Brendan Rodgers' side with 16 goals and 11 assists to his name for the Scottish Premiership table toppers. Kuhn picked up a Scottish top-flight winners medal last season and a Scottish Cup gong with this term's League Cup also in the bag for the Parkhead side.

Now 25, Wunstorf-born Kuhn was looked at by Ajax and Bayern Munich as a youngster but ended up plying his trade in Austria with Rapid Vienna before winning a move to Celtic 12 months ago.

Rodgers said of Kuhn, who is a frontrunner for the Scottish Premiership player of the year and also being monitored for a full Germany call up: "Nicolas is a player who’s improving, and he has still got more improvement for me. That needs to come from where he was at when he first came in to now.

"He’s been a consistent performer, so I’m really pleased about that."

Kuhn has a contract with Celtic until 2029 and while he is not Newcastle's first choice for a new winger, the left-footer is somebody who is grabbing the attention north of the border. Newcastle are trying to beef up their scouting network in Scotland but have sent senior scouts to Parkhead this term with Kuhn the stand out performer.

Celtic snapped up Kuhn for a bargain £3million but he now has a price tag north of £20million.

Newcastle keeping options open with Jamie Miley

The older brother of Lewis Miley is back at Newcastle after a loan spell at Newport County.

Now 20, the oldest of the Miley brothers has been drafted back in by Eddie Howe to catch up with staff and spend some time training back at Benton. He was fielded in the Under-21s defeat at Southampton on Friday which the young Magpies lost 4-2.

Despite playing for Newport this season and now appearing for Newcastle's second string this will not stop him going on loan to another club providing it is in England. The FA have confirmed that he can play for a third club this term as appearances for his parent club won't affect his chances of a second loan.

Back in 2015, Hatem Ben Arfa fell foul of a FIFA rule after playing for Newcastle reserves and Hull City in the same season, only to join Nice on a free transfer in January and discover he could not appear for six months until the new season got under way.

Newcastle will see what clubs are suitable for a loan for Miley, who appeared in pre-season for the Magpies, but may also wait to see what numbers are like in the squad if senior stars do depart and are not replaced. The Stanley midfielder impressed Howe and the coaching staff in pre-season with a flurry of strong performances in friendly games.

The Magpies have already agreed a temporary move this month for Norwegian midfielder Travis Hernes.
