Newcastle United transfers state of play: Kieran Trippier truth, Lloyd Kelly and Targett approach
Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly is said to be "one step away" from signing for Juventus ahead of the transfer window's winter finale.
High level discussions between Juve's transfer supremo Cristiano Giuntoli and Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell were held in the aftermath of the defeat to Fulham. The Magpies are prepared to sell Kelly if the price is right and a deal of £15million was being discussed.
Kelly's move could be a loan initially but Newcastle want a financial commitment from the Serie A side to sign the ex-Bournemouth star at the end of the season. Discussions about the conditions of the transfer were ongoing between Turin and Tyneside on Sunday morning.

Kieran Trippier wanted
The former England full-back is wanted by Turkish table-toppers Galatasaray. The interest in the 34-year-old isn't new but the catch for Newcastle is that the Istanbul outfit want a loan deal with a view to a permanent. Howe pinpointed Trippier's contributions against Fulham on Saturday night and suggested he is not willing to part with the ex-England star. Howe said: "I thought Kieran Trippier made a difference when he came on, adding some control with the ball."
Trippier was then sent for a rigorous warm-down after the defeat and he could even start against Arsenal in midweek as Howe eyes experience in the intense second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal. Crucially, the Turkish transfer window remains open until February 11. If a financial agreement was reached, Trippier could go later and Howe could use the star in the last four shoot out against the Gunners.
Matt Targett Championship bid
Watford approached Newcastle this morning to sign Targett on loan until the end of the season. Leeds dismissed talk of a permanent deal to the Elland Road outfit as "complete fabrication" earlier this week. The left-back was not even on the bench against Fulham and Newcastle will not stand in his way if they get a reasonable offer. Targett's £100,000 per week wages are likely to be a snag for many clubs. His current deal runs until 2026.
