Eddie Howe has described the likely transfer of long-time servant Miguel Almiron as "not ideal", as the club look set to sanction the first departure January window - but Chronicle Live readers in our comments section recognise the bind the club is in due to financial regulations.

The Paraguay international has been approached by his old club, MLS side Atlanta United, and the price appears to match Newcastle United's valuation. Almiron has been unable to nail down a regular spot in Howe's team this season, and will be allowed to end his six year association with the club if a deal is struck.

Howe had previously said on Almiron: "We're not blessed with a huge number of wide players so anyone that we have here is vitally important and Miggy has always proved for us how effective he is when he does play. I'd say the same for any player until the day that they leave that their future is here and he needs to focus on the next game."

Separately, the head coach said: "It's not ideal, but I don't think it's ideal from anyone's viewpoint. We don't want to lose players, but we know there's a reality to PSR."

The hard-working winger will be missed at St James' Park. Reader Tony1971 says: “I like Almiron, love his smile & work ethic! He isn’t the best but remember he was with us under the dark days so thanks for all the memories Mr Almiron. You've done well for us and never stopped trying and that’s good enough for me. Unfortunately for Almiron, we are looking at a different level of performance now and he is not at that level, but still deserves respect and thanks.”

Chopper13 writes: “People forget that it is not just on the pitch that a player like Almiron is useful, in training we need squad players of a certain level to improve and retain a standard for the first team - Miggy should be kept.”

Fans already have an eye on the future, as commenter Paranoidandroid writes: “Firstly, good luck to Miggy and thanks for all the effort and commitment he has shown in black and white. Let's hope he gets a warm welcome back at Atlanta.

"Secondly, let's hope we find another wide player with pace soon. Miggy will leave a gap in Eddie's options that might cost us dearly if Murphy or Gordon pick up injuries. But all the best Miggy, you will always be a Geordie!”

Euripides800 says: “I know we are bound by PSR but if we don’t strengthen now we can’t compete with so called bigger teams. If we don’t compete, revenues don’t rise. If revenues don’t rise we can’t buy to compete, catch 22.”

Gazza949 writes: “Hopefully it will go through. The lads been a joy, but he needs to move on for both his and the clubs benefit.”

DukeLeblanc worries for the near future: “Gordon was forced off at half-time against Bromley and was out of gas after twenty minutes last night. With Barnes injured for a month, who else do we have for cover out wide? Do we keep Miggy until later in the window? If so, does that hamper any incoming transfers?”

MealyWC3441 replies: “If losing Miggy means we can bring in a centre forward then I would say, sad to see the lad go, but we need back up for in case Isak becomes injured. And they don't grow on trees do they, good centre forwards?”
