Newcastle United were very clear to you - now they can learn the transfer verdict
It was always going to be a difficult transfer window for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, but now that it is over it has still left some supporters with as many questions as answers.
Newcastle were very clear from the outset that, unless there was an incredible opportunity, there would be no major incomings this trading period. While a couple of youngsters were signed for the academy and Under-21 set-up, that is exactly how it played out, with United unable and unwilling to get involved in serious recruitment.
The exits of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly have left the squad weaker than it started the season. The deals for both players - Almiron approximately £10million to Atlanta United and Juventus-bound Kelly, for £3m up front loan fee and then £20m obligation to buy - were deemed too good to turn down. Financially, they made sense but it means Howe has a paper-thin squad to see out the rest of the season out and try to claim Newcastle's first domestic silverware in 70 years as well as qualifying for the Champions League.
PSR regulations have played the biggest role but that hasn't stopped fans being dismayed at Newcastle's inability to add a first-team starter to their ranks for three successive transfer windows now. The hope is that it will lead to a bumper summer budget.
