Newcastle United's £13m bargain gives big-name colleagues "no nonsense" warning

Dan Burn lived a boyhood dream when walking out at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final as a Newcastle United player two seasons ago.

But now he wants to go one better in the competition by getting to the final showpiece and winning it with the black and whites. The 6ft 7in Blyth battler has urged his team-mates to treat this fixture just like an encounter against Arsenal or Manchester City. At 32, Burn knows the percentages of reaching another final are diminishing by the year but sees an excellent opportunity against Brentford on Wednesday night.

The Geordie boy has insisted that Newcastle's success will be solely down to having the right attitude on the night against Thomas Frank's side. The Magpies need no reminders of Brentford's qualities after losing 4-2 to the London outfit earlier this month and Burn's timely "no nonsense" warning for the St James' Park last eight crunch night will strike a chord with fans.

Burn wants to take all the positives from the run to the final in 2023 and use them this season. And that painful 2-0 defeat to Manchester United is still providing motivation too.

Burn told Chronicle Live: "It helps to know that we have been there and got to the final before. We know we have the experience to do it. It was a good draw for us at home to Brentford where we want to play. But Brentford are a very good team and it will be a challenge. We would love to string another cup run together."

Burn was a key figure in the cup run two campaigns ago, scoring the goal at the same quarter-final stage against Leicester City to etch his name into Newcastle folklore. His dressing room dance on the Carabao Cup journey to Wembley is also now part of black and white tapestry!

The big defender reflected with a smile: "Going back to that time, the way that the city was it just felt electric wherever you went. We want that back again."

Newcastle's season has been a strange old affair with excellent results against Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. And United also dumped Chelsea out in the previous round to set up this showdown with the Bees.

Burn said: "The challenge for us is consistency. We always seem to be where we need to be against the big teams.

"I never ever worry when we play Man City or Arsenal. It is easy to motivate yourself in those games. It is the games when you are up against the so called lesser teams, that is the challenge, we need that same level of motivation. Whether that's in the League Cup, FA Cup or Premier League."
