Newcastle United's £20million transfer dilemma as Eddie Howe's 'realisation' hits

The January transfer window is now open and while Premier League teams have in the opening seven days remained largely inactive in the market, there is plenty of speculation about who could be on the move.

With Newcastle United's need for an upgrade at right-wing as well as a feeling the right side of the club's centre-back pairing needs strengthening alongside a new striker to compete with Alexander Isak - the rumours are near constant.

Of course, it's not just incoming gossip that dominates the backpages when it comes to Newcastle but there is plenty of focus on who may leave the club with it no secret that the Magpies need to sell before they can sign off a big spend the other way.

On this week's episode of The Monday Show, our Newcastle United Editor Aaron Stokes, and host Andrew Musgrove took a look at what this month may hold for Newcastle United in the transfer market.

Sean Longstaff - unlikely to leave this month unless there's a bid of at least £15m

Sean Longstaff in recent weeks has been strongly linked with an exit from his boyhood club - the very fact that the midfielder has come through the ranks at United means any money brought in for him would represent a huge PSR boost.

Everton and Leeds United are two teams tipped with interest in the 27-year-old but with the midfielder recently signing a contract extension until the summer of 2026, it means potential suitors won't be able to pick up the bargain they once thought.

Asked about Longstaff's future, Stokes said: "I don't know if he will go this month but potentially in the summer. It's hard to see who the suitors are this month - we're a week into the transfer window and it doesn't feel open.

"What is Sean worth to Newcastle? With another year on his contract, £15m? £20m, maybe? Newcastle could if they wanted to sell say £20 million because this was a player who last season who only one or two Newcastle players made more appearances than him.

"He was in the squad week in and week and when they made The Champions League, this is an experienced established Premier League player who has got the backing of the manager. I think they can probably chance their arm for £15m or £20 million - nothing less."

Don't be surprised to see Newcastle United go back in for James Trafford

Burnley are eyeing up a return to the top flight - and goalkeeper James Trafford is proving to be major part of their arsenal to do so.

The 22-year-old has kept an impressive 16 clean sheets this season as The Clarets, under the management of former Toon midfielder Scott Parker sit second in the table, just a point off the top.

Trafford was close to joining United in the summer of 2024 but The Magpies opted to bring in John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos instead - however with the likely exit of Martin Dubravka this month, there's a belief that the club could revisit their interest in Trafford.

Speaking on The Monday Show, Stokes said: "I really like Trafford - he is fantastic with the ball at his feet and learned it all at Manchester City.

"I had worries about his shot-stopping but you look at Burnley this season, they've been so solid defensively and James Trafford has played all but one of their Championship games.

"They've conceded just nine goals - that is remarkable record. He will be so much better for the last two seasons he's had - it was bad last season as Burnley went down but he's having a fantastic season this time.

"He's big, he's good with the ball at his feet and I really wouldn't be against him signing - and Eddie Howe really likes him."

Newcastle United's PSR fears are still there - and Eddie Howe knows it

Taking away the Newcastle United interest - the PSR restrictions really are a stain on the competitiveness that the Premier League should be built upon.

It's not about having an open chequebook but being allowed to spend within reason to help progress the club - and so far Newcastle among others have been hit by it.

It's no secret that Newcastle will have to sell a player this month if they are to bring someone in - and Toon boss Howe has spoken about a potentially 'unpopular sale' taking place this month. While it's not expected to be someone like Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak, it could point to someone like Harvey Barnes leaving should the right bid come in.

Speaking on the podcast, Stokes believes Howe's stance has changed over the last 12 months when it comes to selling his stars.

"Howe is coming to the realisation [he can't keep everyone] - in previous windows he's fought so hard to keep players at the club - pretty much 12 months ago to the day, Kieran Trippier is the prime example.

"It was in that window that Bayern Munich came in, if that was this window, I think Kieran Trippier goes in a heartbeat. Last year, Eddie said 'no, we need to keep him.

"Now they had lot of injuries, maybe that was a mitigating factor and they couldn't really afford to lose anyone but this time around, if an offer comes in, even if Eddie Howe wants to keep that player, I think they go."
