Newcastle United's long-term search for another goalkeeper will continue quietly during the current January transfer window.

The Magpies are currently in talks to hold down Martin Dubravka beyond his 2025 summer contract expiry but the longer-term scouting mission for a successor to Nick Pope will continue. There are no secrets when it comes to Newcastle's admiration for Burnley's James Trafford after two unsuccessful attempts to sign the England Under-21 international last summer.

Despite having Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy on the books behind Dubravka and Pope, neither are considered long-term options given their age brackets. Newcastle were again linked with England international Aaron Ramsdale on Friday and the

England international Ramsdale is admired immensely by both head coach Eddie Howe and assistant head of scouting Andy Howe. The nephew of Howe put in some serious hours scouting the 26-year-old during his Bournemouth days and there is a feeling his career could be rectified on Tyneside.

He opted for a switch to Southampton last summer but with the Saints staring relegation in the face and a World Cup year coming up, he would have little interest in Championship football. Southampton do have Ramsdale tied down to a deal until at least 2028 but he has a series of clauses in his contract that could see him sold at the right price.

The South Coast outfit paid £20million to Arsenal for his services last summer. The former Wimbledon loanee was open to a switch to the North-East in the last window and would welcome a link up with Howe again, but PSR issues resulted in Newcastle signing Vlachodimos and the goalkeeping pool is currently full.

Ruddy's contract is up at the end of the season but any exit for Dubravka, either now or in the summer, would open the door for Ramsdale and Newcastle are monitoring his progress.

It is estimated that Pope could be back for the Southampton game at the end of the month by which time Howe would have a decision to make. When asked if handing Dubravka a longer stay was the right decision with Pope's return just around the corner and the prospect of a cash deal going up in smoke, Howe told Chronicle Live today: "I think the right decision will be the right decision, not just for us but for Martin.

"There's always lots of different sides to a situation, it is never as clear as the outside people may think. Martin has been performing really well and has been the model professional. We want to keep him. He has never said he wants to leave. So hopefully we can find the right decision."

Abdukodir Khusanov

The Magpies were linked heavily with the Lens star in the build-up to the January window even opening. But strong reports in France now suggest he is heading to Premier League rivals Man City.

Khusanov is keen on the move and Pep Guardiola is said to have given the thumbs up to sign the star in January window. A centre-back was never the priority for Newcastle in this window, but given his fledgling age he fits in with the type of "star for the future" that sporting director Paul Mitchell is keen on.

Edmond Tapsoba

The Burkina Faso international has courted the interests of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham in recent times. But he has been checked out by United scout Mick Tait to on Germany scouting missions.

Tapsoba, a 25-year-old centre-back, is deemed Premier League ready after helping Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga last term. This season he has impressed again as Xabi Alonso's side cruise to the Champions League knockout stages and continue with another title push.

The right-sided centre-back seems more like a summer target for Newcastle with a price tag of around £40million touted.
