Newcastle United's PIF stadium tweak on show as Saudi backing tops £657m
Newcastle United's main backers displayed their day-to-day presence at St James' Park in the home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers - quite literally.
For during the 3-0 victory fans watched on as the electronic advertising hoardings flashed up with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund's logo on them. It was the first time since the takeover that this has happened but the PIF signs come after the financial contributions from the owners topped £657million last week.
It all feels a far cry from the days in which Sports Direct was plastered all over St James' Park as Mike Ashley looked to use the club as a vehicle for his business rather than inject big funds on to the field. But pumping money into Newcastle to enhance the Magpies' PSR status is an ongoing process.

Chronicle Live sources last week were told that PIF's commitment behind the scenes is witnessed pretty much every day at St James' Park down the corridors of power. The Saudi backers have a daily presence on Tyneside to ensure that any needs can be quickly communicated to the powers that be in Riyadh.
And PIF continue to put their money where their mouth is - despite the restrictions of the Premier League rule book meaning Newcastle must tread carefully in the current window.
Toon directors last week issued just one 5p share and paid in £15million into the Magpies' kitty, something which club sources say that PIF have done on a regular basis throughout their ownership. It took PIF's investment in the club to over £657m since the takeover.
The Magpies took a major step towards getting into the Champions League with their victory over Wolves. Regardless of title talk and the push for the two domestic cups, the wish of the ownership is to be in Europe's premier competition next season again.
With a new Swiss-style format and the riches set to increase from UEFA, it is quite simply the only place to be for any ambitious club. Back in 2023, Toon chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan had stated: "Finishing in the top four, our revenue is increasing. Remember, you have to work within the financial fair play framework, so the more revenue we will have, the more players we will have ready.
"Then the Champions League will add more revenue for us. The sponsorship is improving and that’s more funds and more revenue. If you put all these things together, I think we should have an ambition and aspiration to be number one."
Newcastle's odds on getting into the Champions League this season are now 6/5 with Bet Victor and Ladbrokes.
