Newcastle vs AC Milan - LIVE!

Newcastle's Champions League campaign came to an end as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against AC Milan. The Magpies went into the final group-stage match knowing they needed to win at St James' Park, while also hoping that PSG failed to beat Borussia Dortmund in the other Group F encounter.

Both requirements were met at the halfway stage, with Joelinton's superb strike putting Newcastle in front and it goalless after 45 minutes in Germany. The hopes of Eddie Howe's side improved further when Dortmund then took the lead, but PSG swiftly equalised and Newcastle then conceded themselves, as Christian Pulisic turned the ball home from close range with Milan's first shot on target of the match.

That set up a grandstand final half an hour, with both sides needing to find a winner, and Samuel Chukwueze did that late on barely a minute after coming on, as he bent a lovely finish into the far corner.

Pre-match thoughts from Eddie Howe

The Newcastle boss has been speaking ahead of kick-off...

Piolo ready for Newcastle 'intensity'

19:27 , Matt Verri

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli is confident his side can rise to the occasion and cope with a bouncing St James' Park tonight.

“I think it is very mental, you have to be in it in these games," he said.

"We know what intensity they will bring, we know we can have difficulties. The matches are long, they change, we have to be in it until the end.

"In the first leg we didn’t manage to score a goal, but we managed to put them in trouble.”

Howe: We have European football in our hands

19:19 , Matt Verri

Newcastle are not entirely in control of their Champions League destiny, but they can ensure they at least have European football next year.

The Magpies will qualify for the Europa League if they pick up at least a point tonight, with that enough to finish third.

The focus is though on a victory and the possibility of reaching the last-16 of the Champions League.

"To be here with some kind of destiny in our hands - European football still in our hands - I think we would have taken that at the start of the group," Eddie Howe said.

"We can control our performance tomorrow and give everything we can to try and win. We will respect our opponents - we played well in Milan, it was a really open game. They are a good team, but we are going into this one confident.

"We are desperate to stay in this competition first and foremost, and if we can't then stay in Europe."

Howe wants another special night

18:35 , Matt Verri

Newcastle have time and time again delivered big performances at St James' Park.

They hammered PSG here earlier this season, and boss Eddie Howe is eyeing another memorable occasion tonight.

Howe said: "We are very positive going into the game. It has all the hallmarks of being a very special night. All we can do is to try and win the game and give our best performance.

"We want to make this a magical European night.

"Being under the lights here, in the Champions League, is always very special - something to play for, something to gain."

Karius to make Champions League return?

18:26 , Matt Verri

Nick Pope is out with a shoulder injury for Newcastle, and back-up goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is a doubt for tonight's match.

He missed training at the start of the week due to a back injury, meaning third-choice Loris Karius could be called upon tonight.

The 30-year-old has not featured in the Champions League since his two big errors in the 2018 final, when he was a Liverpool player.

Reverse fixture

18:16 , Matt Verri

After 20 years away from the Champions League, Newcastle marked their return to the competition earlier this season with a trip to the San Siro.

The Magpies had to ride their luck, but they picked up a point... one that could prove crucial later tonight.

Stage is set!

18:06 , Matt Verri

Going to be some atmosphere at St James' Park tonight...

Standard Sport prediction

17:57 , Matt Verri

The Magpies are relying on their shattered legs re-energising under the bright lights of a ferocious St James' Park.

It is not hard to see that happening but the Rossoneri's last four away games have produced a combined 16 goals, so prepare for a wild night that may well favour the fresher bodies.

Milan to win, 3-2.

AC Milan team news

17:51 , Matt Verri

Milan have Rafael Leao and Noah Okafor fit in major boosts to their attacking options.

An injury-hit defence will though be without Simon Kjaer, Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu and Marco Pellegrino.

Newcastle team news

17:44 , Matt Verri

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will consider introducing Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff to his starting line-up for tonight's crunch Champions League match against AC Milan.

Martin Dubravka, however, could miss out due to illness - meaning third-choice goalkeeper Loris Karius is in line to feature.

Howe had Wilson and Longstaff back on his bench at Tottenham on Sunday but has suggested he is reluctant to throw them into the XI against Milan.

"I’ve been backed into a very difficult position with the team selection, and even in-game decisions," he said after the 4-1 defeat.

"Today, it would have been very easy to say, ‘Well, you’ve got Sean and Callum – put them on the pitch’. But they’re not 100 per cent fit, so I’ve got to be very careful with them.

"Thankfully, they came through and I thought their performances were very good when they came on, and that’s a big positive for us. I think they’ll be better for today – it was a good 30 minutes for them – but we’ll have to take it game by game and it’s a difficult one to predict what role they could play on Wednesday."

Predicted Newcastle XI: Karius; Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Isak, Gordon
