Newcastle vs Arsenal LIVE! Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Newcastle vs Arsenal - LIVE!

Newcastle gave Arsenal their first Premier League defeat of the season with a battling 1-0 victory, thanks to a controversial second-half goal by Anthony Gordon at a rain-lashed St. James' Park. Eddie Howe's Magpies, who are unbeaten in their last seven league outings, climbed to sixth in the table and only four points behind Arsenal, who lost ground on Manchester City and could fall further behind Tottenham on Monday night.

The victory capped a brilliant week for Newcastle, who humbled defending champions Manchester United 3-0 in a last-16 League Cup clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Gordon scored in the 64th minute, firing home past David Raya from close range after a goalmouth scramble. There was a lengthy break for VAR to check whether the ball went out of bounds, whether there was a foul in the build-up and for offside before Newcastle's fans could celebrate.

The game was high on emotion but lacking in quality for much of the time and tempers boiled over before the break with a flurry of yellow cards. Bruno Guimaraes was fortunate to avoid a red card before the break, as he swung an arm and caught Jorginho in the head.

FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:32 , Matt Verri

That's it!

Newcastle have their three points, Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season is over.

An ugly match really, nothing it in... the Magpies couldn't care less.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:30 , Matt Verri

90+7 mins: Arsenal's set-piece coach has some explaining to do. They are now into double figures for corners, had a number of dangerous free-kicks... nothing from them.

Trossard with the latest corner, doesn't beat the first man. It is AWFUL.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:29 , Matt Verri

90+6 mins: Zinchenko drills the ball into the six-yard box, nobody in an Arsenal shirt makes the run to the near post.

Gabriel keeps them on the attack though, turns Trippier and wins a free-kick on the byline.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:27 , Matt Verri

90+4 mins: Yet another Arsenal corner coming up. Trossard has to get this right.

To the near post, headed behind for another one. All the Arsenal players are at the back post, so I'd suggest he might want to aim this somewhere near them.

Hammered to the near post, cleared. What do I know.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:25 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Can Vieira put a good ball into the box?

No. Ritchie clears it away at the near post. Newcastle threaten to break, but as ever Rice is there to halt the counter.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:23 , Matt Verri

90 mins: EIGHT minutes added on!

And Livramento is the latest player into the book, ugly challenge on Martinelli.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:21 , Matt Verri

88 mins: That's been coming for basically the whole match.

Guimaraes swings an arm yet again, catching Vieira in the face this time. Referee sees it and it's a yellow card for the midfielder.

He's suspended for Newcastle's next League match.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:19 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Arsenal corner, Trossard over to take it. Still the best part of ten minutes to play, with all the stoppage-time we're expecting.

Headed out by Newcastle, who continue to look really solid at the back.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:16 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Martinelli looks the most likely for Arsenal, that's the wing they are going down.

Still not much to get excited about from the visitors though, they're struggling to build any pressure.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:13 , Matt Verri

80 mins: So Ritchie on for Murphy, and there's two Arsenal changes too.

Nketiah and Jorginho off, Trossard and Vieira on.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:11 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Looked a lot like Murphy just tried to shoot from basically the halfway line, out on the touchline. Bold.

Luckily for him, the ball bounces straight back to him.

He's got an even bigger problem now. Murphy has rushed back from a dislocated shoulder... and it's just popped out again. He's almost in tears as he marches off.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:09 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Newcastle getting everyone behind the ball, a wall of black and white shirts for Arsenal to break down.

Martinelli swings in a deep cross, Trippier does superbly at the back post to see it out for a goal-kick.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:06 , Matt Verri

73 mins: First Arsenal change.

White off, Zinchenko on. Tomiyasu will switch over to left-back.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:05 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Arsenal corner, Livramento thinks he's kept the ball in play but the referee does not. And it will be another one, Martinelli's delivery flicked behind.

Arsenal want a third in a row... this time goal-kick given.

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

19:03 , Matt Verri

70 mins: So, Arsenal have 20 minutes to rescue this and maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Home fans are right up for it again, celebrating every tackle.

Busy few minutes...

19:02 , Matt Verri

The VAR check to give Antony Gordon's opening goal lasted a full four minutes and two seconds, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

It checked whether the ball went out of play, whether there was a foul and whether there was an offside. Remarkable.

GOAL!

18:59 , Matt Verri

It stands!

Ball in play, no foul and onside is the judgement from VAR.

Newcastle do have the lead.

18:59 , Matt Verri

And now an offside check.

VAR fairly keen to rule this out...

18:58 , Matt Verri

Will this stand?

Arsenal convinced the ball went out play when Willock flicked it back in. Replays suggest it is very, very tight. Almost impossible to tell.

Gabriel wants a foul too. All going on.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal | Anthony Gordon 63'

18:56 , Matt Verri

NEWCASTLE TAKE THE LEAD!

Seconds after he moves through the middle. It's a mess from Arsenal at the back, not clearing the initial long ball forward.

Willock then does brilliantly to keep the ball in play, crosses it into the middle. Ball bounces around, falls for Gordon and he hammers into an empty net from about two yards out.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:55 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Pretty much as close as Arsenal have come.

Lovely move, Rice playing in Martinelli down the left. Dinked to the back post, cleared back out to Rice and he heads wide from about 12 yards out.

Newcastle turn to their bench. Willock and Murphy coming on, Wilson and Almiron off. Will be Gordon up front now.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:53 , Matt Verri

60 mins: Jorginho caught on the ball, real chance for Newcastle to break but they make a mess of it.

Guimaraes is back to shoving anything and everything that moves..

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:49 , Matt Verri

57 mins: It's started to boil over again. Challenges flying in, players down holding their faces...

Referee waving everything on - not sure he's fully in control. At all.

It's got the noise from the stands up again.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:47 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Chance for Arsenal, ball falls for Nketiah in the box but he basically takes a swing at thin air.

Newcastle break, Wilson fouled but advantage played. Almiron slides the pass through to Gordon, takes too long to get the shot away and White flies in the block.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:46 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Arsenal defending really well.

Gordon played in on the left, cuts inside onto his right foot but there are three red shirts on the scene to stop the shot.

Nketiah then holds up the ball and wins a free-kick to ease the pressure.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:43 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Havertz needs to be very, very careful.

Ball bobbles free and he slides in, just about getting there first but catching Wilson too.

Newcastle man makes the most of it, but referee waves play on. Havertz cannot be far away from a second yellow.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:40 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Livramento lining up at right-back, so Trippier has shifted over to the left.

Good first involvement from Livramento, sliding in on Martinelli inside his own box, knocking the ball off the Brazilian and winning a goal-kick.

Back underway!

18:37 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half.

Livramento on to replace Burn, no changes for Arsenal.

18:35 , Matt Verri

Dan Burn is sat on the touchline in his tracksuit - looks like his match is over.

Spent most of the half holding his back after an awkward fall, no surprise he's coming off.

It's very heated!

18:29 , Matt Verri

Half time at St James's Park and both teams have cancelled each other out, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

It is getting feisty out on the pitch, though. Multiple incidents have seen players pushing each other after Havertz's crazy lunge ignited the atmosphere in Newcastle.

That Havertz challenge...

18:25 , Matt Verri

This started all the frustration!

HT: Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:22 , Matt Verri

And breathe!

It's been an ill-tempered 45 minutes... still goalless.

Not much in the way of chances for either side, but plenty of talking points.

Guimaraes lucky?

18:21 , Matt Verri

Gabriel Martinelli worked himself the best chance of the game through his quick, direct dribbling but hit it straight at Nick Pope, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Minutes earlier, Bruno Guimaraes seemed to whack Jorginho in his head with his arm, VAR don't give a red card but it could have been...

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:21 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: We're a few minutes away from a red card at this rate - both teams need half-time.

Guimaraes hammers the ball at Havertz, starts appealing and then gets into a shoving match with Rice. Guimaraes is running HOT.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:19 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: First chance for Martinelli to have a run out on the left wing.

He cuts inside into the box, sits Trippier down. Goes for goal, straight at Pope though.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:18 , Matt Verri

45+1 mins: Four minutes added on.

Jorginho down after playing the ball across the pitch - Guimaraes swung an arm at him and caught Jorginho on the head.

Assume VAR had a look, but clearly not interested.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:16 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Guimaraes slides the pass through to Joelinton, space for him 25 yards out and the shot is blocked.

Comes back to Guimaraes, who also can't resist trying his luck from distance. Drags it comfortably wide.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:13 , Matt Verri

41 mins: Trippier stands up a great cross to the back post.

Wilson can't win the header, falls for Gordon though... he wasn't expecting it. Bounces off him and the ball rolls through to Raya.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:12 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Guimaraes now down, he think he's been caught by Rice. Referee struggling to keep control of this.

Five minutes until half-time, but we'll get a fair bit more added on.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:11 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Well it's worked out pretty well for Arsenal.

Gordon, Schar and Longstaff have all been booked for their complaints - Havertz three steps ahead of everyone.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:09 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Absolute madness from Havertz.

It's all kicked off, fans have woken up again. The Arsenal midfielder has FLOWN into a challenge and left Longstaff in a heap. Terrible challenge, both feet off the ground.

Newcastle players didn't like that at all. Just a yellow card.

Nketiah putting in a shift

18:06 , Matt Verri

Eddie Nketiah hasn't had a clear sight of goal yet but he just cut out a Kieran Trippier ball in his own box, while tracking a midfield runner, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

That's incredible work rate.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:06 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Newcastle yet to have a shot, Arsenal haven't troubled Pope... but it's been a very watchable clash so far.

Burn is playing with one hand on his back the whole time, having landed awkwardly about ten minutes ago. He's in a lot of pain - no sign that he's going to be replaced though.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:03 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Saka clattered by Burn, right in front of Arteta. The Arsenal boss is not impressed, shall we say.

And again - Burn with a second foul on the winger in a minute. Three Arsenal players over to demand a yellow card, but Burn escapes.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

18:01 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Big chance!

Guimaraes floats the ball to the back post, Burn nods it down and the ball falls to Wilson in the six-yard box... blasts over.

Offside flag goes up - that would have been very tight had he scored.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:58 , Matt Verri

27 mins: Feels like it won't take much for this to get very heated.

It's just bubbling, Wilson shoving into Gabriel having already clashed with Saliba. Mikel Arteta and Jason Tindall have been having words on the touchline too.

These two sides not hugely fond of each other...

Rice growing into the match

17:56 , Matt Verri

Declan Rice drove from the edge of his own box to Newcastle's to create a half-chance for Eddie Nketiah, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

The midweek disappointment of being booed and then losing to West Ham has had minimal impact on him, it seems.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:55 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Nketiah with a half-chance, heads over at the back post. Might have been better leaving that for Gabriel behind him.

Good spell this for Arsenal, well on top. Need to make it count.

In the balance

17:53 , Matt Verri

Arsenal and Newcastle are very much cancelling each other out at the moment, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Both teams are known for their solid defences right now and it shows. Arsenal have been marginally better, having had a few shots blocked.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:53 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Martinelli and Jorginho with shots blocked... and you can add Saliba to that list. Another corner coming up.

Rice and Nketiah both wanted a penalty from the last corner, they though they were dragged to the ground.

Another decent delivery, palmed out by Pope. Jorginho on the volley from the edge of the area... miles over.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:51 , Matt Verri

19 mins: It's opened up all of a sudden!

Both sides looking very vulnerable on the counter all of a sudden. Almiron unable to make Arsenal play, before Rice flies up the pitch.

Saka has an effort blocked, comes back to him and he takes too long to get the shot away. Has to settle for a corner.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:49 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Clear strategy from Arsenal to slow things down when the ball is dead.

Raya takes an age before lumping a free-kick up the pitch, visitors keen to try and take the sting out of things.

Tomiyasu fired up!

17:47 , Matt Verri

Takehiro Tomiyasu celebrating winning a corner like it was a goal was a fun sight to see, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

There's a sense he is back on his way up after a long spell as a substitute.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:47 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Guimaraes wants a free-kick on the edge of his own area, but he's swarmed by three Arsenal players.

Ball breaks free for Tomiyasu, who tries his luck from distance and the shot is deflected behind for a corner.

Taken short, comes across to Martinelli and his effort from 20 yards it charged down.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:45 , Matt Verri

13 mins: It's all very scrappy so far.

Plenty of fouls, neither side able to get any real control. Midfield has been chaotic, no time for anyone on the ball. Match yet to settle down.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:42 , Matt Verri

10 mins: Joelinton fine to continue, Willock's warm-up will be a brief one.

Home fans getting increasingly annoyed as the midfielder is forced to wait for 30 seconds on the touchline - eventually he's waved back on.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:40 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Jorginho and Joelinton both go tumbling to the ground after colliding in midfield - referee waves play on.

And he does so again, when Joelinton clashes with Saliba seconds later. The Brazilian has stayed down.

Tactical battle emerging

17:38 , Matt Verri

The opening five minutes have been pressing system versus pressing system at St James' Park, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Nick Pope has opted to go long, while William Saliba took a risk in a dangerous moment but came out with the ball.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:37 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Arsenal have started pretty well, knocking the ball around confidently.

Newcastle very nearly away on the break though, Wilson unable to pick out Almiron who would have been away out wide.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

17:34 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Gabriel fires the ball back to Raya, and he just about controls it and pings it out wide before Wilson closes him down.

Saliba then surrounded by three black and white shirts in his box, cool enough to turn his way out of trouble.

KICK-OFF!

17:32 , Matt Verri

We're up and running!

17:29 , Matt Verri

It's Jorginho with the captain's armband for Arsenal this evening.

Time for a minute's silence ahead of kick-off, with this Newcastle's final home match before Remembrance Day.

Here we go!

17:25 , Matt Verri

Brilliant atmosphere as ever at St. James' Park. Sandro Tonali is in the stands, in the early days of his 10-month ban.

Very nearly time to find out if his team-mates can keep delivering in his absence. Players are in the tunnel.

All eyes on Nketiah

17:22 , Matt Verri

It is now 18 matches in all competitions since Eddie Nketiah last scored away from home.

He's been really impressive at the Emirates, scoring a hat-trick last weekend, but that form on the road is a real concern.

Chance to put that right this evening - Arsenal need him to step up.

Arteta on Odegaard absence

17:13 , Matt Verri

"Not available, not fit. We can't play him.

"Our captain, a really important player, but an opportunity for others to step up and have a great performance."

Wenger wants Arsenal title push!

17:09 , Matt Verri

Will this season be the one for the Gunners?

Arteta makes Spurs admission

17:02 , Matt Verri

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that Tottenham must be considered title contenders after their brilliant start to the season.

Unbeaten Spurs sit two points clear of north London rivals Arsenal ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Monday night.

They have surprised many with their fast start to life under head coach Ange Postecoglou, who was appointed in the summer.

Asked if Tottenham must now be considered rivals for the title this season, Arteta said: “They are right there now, and they merit to be where they are, so yes.”

As it stands...

16:54 , Matt Verri

Manchester City have put six past Bournemouth in one of the 3pm kick-offs to lift themselves to the top of the Premier League table.

Arsenal can move alongside them on 27 points with victory here - need to score six to go above them on goal difference. Sure Arteta would be happy enough with just the three points.

Spurs can of course go above both Arsenal and City again should they beat Chelsea on Monday night.

Victory would lift Newcastle up to sixth in the table, and only four points behind the Gunners.

How Rice became instant success

16:49 , Matt Verri

It is a sign of how loved Declan Rice is at Arsenal that if you were to walk into their canteen, you would struggle to guess who he is sat with.

One day it might be Leandro Trossard, the next maybe Ben White or Eddie Nketiah. The only certainty is that Rice would not be on his own.

After joining in July for a club-record £105million fee, Rice made it his priority to speak to everyone as he set about hitting the ground running at Arsenal.

He was given a helping hand by Mikel Arteta on his first day, when the manager slapped a name tag on his shirt that said: ‘Hello, I’m the new person!’

Thankfully for Rice, many of his new team-mates had a day off, but Arteta’s joke landed well with the academy players who were present.

Tomiyasu gets his chance

16:43 , Matt Verri

There were signs Takehiro Tomiyasu was going to start soon and he deservedly comes in to face Newcastle, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

It's his first Premier League start since September but five good substitute appearances mean he deserves his recall in such a big match.

Eddie Nketiah makes his 100th Premier League appearance for Arsenal. He's the 66th player to reach the landmark figure and first since Alexandre Lacazette.

No Odegaard

16:40 , Matt Verri

Big news for Arsenal is that Martin Odegaard misses out.

He was rested against Sheffield United, came on late in midweek against West Ham and now is not deemed fit even to make the squad.

Otherwise it's largely as expected, with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice back in the starting lineup. Takehiro Tomiyasu gets the nod at left-back.

Newcastle have injury issues themselves, but it's still a strong side. Willock on the bench against his former club.

Transport disaster for U18s...

16:21 , Matt Verri

Arsenal Under-18s game against Brighton was postponed this afternoon due to a driving error.

There were claims that the young Gunners side ended up at Bournemouth, rather than Brighton, but Standard Sport understands reports the squad ended up 100 miles away at the wrong seaside town are incorrect.

Instead, the team coach took the wrong exit off the M25 and realised too late to make the kick-off time.

In an attempt to hold the fixture, the kick-off was initially pushed back to 12.30pm with the squad expected to be late, before the game was postponed entirely.

Arsenal U18s will now play Brighton at a later date.

Gunners up against it

16:12 , Matt Verri

Arsenal know exactly what they will be up against at Newcastle on Saturday - from bitter experience.

Mikel Arteta’s side visit a club where the project is well ahead of schedule following a takeover two years ago by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund amid a relegation battle.

The concern on Tyneside early this season was whether the squad would be strong enough to challenge on several fronts.

Yet Eddie Howe’s team, who beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in the Champions League last month, are sixth in the Premier League and into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

White set for new deal

16:04 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Arsenal are "working hard" in talks with Ben White over a new contract.

The club have turned their attention to the defender after securing the long-term futures of Aaron Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba.

White has established himself as one of Arteta’s most consistent performers since joining the Gunners from Brighton for £50m in the summer of 2021.

Despite the fact the 26-year-old still has just under three years to run on his current deal, there is an acceptance he should be rewarded for his form.

Asked about the state of play regarding White’s new contract, Arteta said: “We are always trying to keep the squad in a healthy position in any way, and the club and Edu especially are working on that.”

Half-time in the 3pm kick-offs.

Toney to Arsenal links continue

15:50 , Matt Verri

Thomas Frank insists Ivan Toney is happy at Brentford despite interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Standard Sport understands the Bees are willing to sell the striker for around £80m in January, with Toney set to enter the final 18 months of his contract.

Frank said on Frida: "I want him to stay. Ivan is happy to stay.

"He is happy at the club. What happens in the future is impossible to guess about.

"He's a top player, one of our most important players, if not the most important last year. Any player that can score 20-plus goals in the Premier League are very, very important.

"Ivan's skillset in terms of finishing abilities with his left and right (foot), heading and his composure in those moments and his link-up play and his presence, character, is a very good package.

"It's not (up to) me to put a price tag on him, it's down to the club. But I'm happy with him, I hope he plays here forever and I'm the coach."

Stage is set!

15:42 , Matt Verri

First impressions... it looks absolutely freezing.

Standard Sport prediction

15:35 , Matt Verri

What a mighty test this is for both teams.

Newcastle know a win will catapult them back into the top-four picture and continue a fine run of form, whereas Arsenal will want at least a point to continue their title push.

It's a very tough one to predict, but here goes...

Arsenal to win, 1-0.

Arsenal team news

15:26 , Matt Verri

Arsenal travel to face Newcastle today with Martin Odegaard expected to return to the starting lineup.

The Gunners captain was an unused substitute in last week’s 5-0 win over Sheffield United, but came off the bench for the final 10 minutes against West Ham on Wednesday and scored Arsenal’s only goal in a 3-1 Carabao Cup loss.

Arsenal trained again on Friday and Odegaard was assessed after that before a decision was made as to whether or not he was able to start on Tyneside.

David Raya will return in goal and William Saliba is set to be part of the defence again. Takehiro Tomiyasu may replace Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.

Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey remain sidelined, along with new casualty Emile Smith Rowe and long-term absentee Jurrien Timber.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu; Odegaard, Jorginho, Rice; Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli

A hefty injury list grew for Newcastle in midweek with Matt Targett taken off early at Old Trafford with a hip injury.

Eddie Howe has confirmed again that no new players will be back from injury this weekend as the left-back joins Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Javier Manquillo in the treatment room while Sandro Tonali is suspended.
