Newcastle vs Manchester City LIVE!

Manchester City were held to a second straight draw in the Premier League after Newcastle United held the reigning champions to a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park on Saturday.

In a scrappy affair where eight yellow cards were handed out, City took the lead 35 minutes in when winger Jack Grealish found Josko Gvardiol with a pass and the full-back skilfully turned Dan Burn before firing in at the bottom corner.

Newcastle struck back in the 58th minute when Anthony Gordon went one-on-one with City goalkeeper Ederson, who conceded a penalty when he tripped him. The England international scored from the spot to level the game at 1-1.

City stay provisionally top with 14 points from six games as they wait for Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal to play their games, while Newcastle are fifth with 11 points. You can read the game back below with our dedicated match blog.

That’s a huge chance, had to hit the target.

14:06 , Alex Young

78min: Now Trippier is replaced by Livramento.

14:05 , Alex Young

77min: Willock and Longstaff replace Barnes and Tonali.

Newcastle now camped on the edge of their area.

14:01 , Alex Young

73min: Willock warming up.

14:01 , Alex Young

72min: A lovely take down in the area from Haaland to tee up Foden for shot, but it’s straight at Pope.

69min: Half a chance for Haaland to sneak in but Pope is quick off his line to punch the ball away.

13:55 , Alex Young

66min: Foden is on for Gundogan.

13:54 , Alex Young

65min: It’s wave after wave from Newcastle. City need to calm things down again.

13:51 , Alex Young

62min: Grealish and Tonali both booked for an off-the-ball clash.

St James’ Park is fired up!

13:50 , Alex Young

61min: Oh my, Newcastle have their tales up.

First Joelinton wants a penalty after hitting the deck - but it’s soft - and then Barnes is denied after a neat pass by Murphy.

13:49 , Alex Young

60min: Kovacic is late on Tonali and picks up a deserved booking.

Stones and Foden warming up.

13:47 , Alex Young

59min: Guardiola is waving his finger in disapproval from the touchline, but it was a clear penalty.

13:40 , Alex Young

51min: Barnes throws himself to the ground under pressure from Walker inside the area.

Both the referee and VAR not interested.

13:36 , Alex Young

48min: Pope plays Guimaraes short and almost lets Gundogan in, but the City man is penalised for a foul.

Second half!

13:34 , Alex Young

46min: Back underway, no changes.

13:32 , Alex Young

Players emerging for the second half.

13:29 , Alex Young

You wonder if Newcastle will change anything at the break, but there is very little on their bench.

Lewis has found it hard against Joelinton and Guimaraes, so Guardiola could also be thinking of changing things up.

13:24 , Alex Young

Gvardiol's goal is the difference, and both Haaland and Gundogan could have added to that tally, but the hosts are not out of this.

HALF-TIME!

13:17 , Alex Young

47min: Superb shot on the turn from Joelinton to force Ederson into his first save of the game!

The corner comes in, but City clear... and that’s half-time!

13:16 , Alex Young

46min: One minute added on.

13:15 , Alex Young

44min: A superb run from Murphy takes him round Lewis and to the touchline, to cut back for Gordon but City clear.

13:13 , Alex Young

42min: City queuing up now.

First a poor touch from Haaland in the area allows Newcastle half clear, only as far as Gundogan - whose heavy pass gives Haaland no chance of a second attempt.

13:11 , Alex Young

40min: Oh, Gundogan had to score!

A clanger from Pope passes the ball straight to Gundogan, who has all the time in the world to lob the keeper from 45 yards... but waits, and waits and waits and then sends a weak effort into the backtracking keeper’s arms.

13:08 , Alex Young

38min: Haaland, who appears to have suffered a cut to his Achilles, is back on defensive duty to head clear another Newcastle corner.

GOAL!

13:06 , Alex Young

35min: Oh my, what a finish!

Newcastle have edged the game so far but a quick change of feet in the area by Gvardiol and a neat side-foot finish put City in the lead!

13:03 , Alex Young

32min: Another Newcastle booking as Guimaraes is late on Gundogan.

13:01 , Alex Young

31min: City taking their time over these set-pieces, and not doing much with them at the moment. Gundogan just sent a woeful attempted cross straight behind with about six of his team-mates in the box.

12:59 , Alex Young

28min: Much better from City and Bernardo, who cuts inside and arrows a beauty of a pass to the back post which Trippier just about clears in time.

12:57

27min: Half a chance for City as Bernardo spots Gundogan darting into the area unmarked, but the pass is behind his team-mate, who can only direct a shot off target.

12:56 , Alex Young

25min: Newcastle corner, Haaland flicks it on and it hits Grealish to concede another.

Second corner is to the back post and City deal with it to break through Grealish, who is hacked down by Schar for the first booking of the game.

12:53 , Alex Young

23min: Heart-in-mouth moment from Ederson as he’s closed down by Gordon enough to boot the ball out of play.

12:53 , Alex Young

22min: Bernardo floats in the free kick but there’s a foul on a Newcastle player.

12:52 , Alex Young

21min: Joelinton clambers all over Grealish to concede a foul near the halfway line. Guardiola is not too happy.

12:49 , Alex Young

19min: Some decent pressure from Newcastle as they send in cross after cross for Dias to head away.

It’s been a decent start from the hosts, pushing City back.

12:48 , Alex Young

17min: Corner again wasted.

12:47 , Alex Young

16min: Trippier, who has changed his boots, gets to the byline to cut back the ball but it’s cleared. He then plays in Tonali to do the same, who wins a corner.

12:47 , Alex Young

15min: Newcastle corner comes in but it’s easy pickings for Ederson.

12:46 , Alex Young

14min: Grealish takes a Trippier rocket from the edge of the area straight in the stomach, he looks he some pain and has conceded a corner.

12:43 , Alex Young

12min: Murphy again on the ball on the right and this time goes early with the cross, which is easily cut out.

Chance wasted.

12:41 , Alex Young

10min: City smartly trying to slow the pace down, get Newcastle to calm a tad as they settle into their stride.

12:39 , Alex Young

8min: Murphy is found in space on the right, takes a touch or two and whips in a brilliant ball towards Barnes at the far post... but the winger doesn’t gamble and the chance goes begging.

12:37 , Alex Young

7min: Haaland’s first shot on goal, and it’s a weak one on the turn inside the area.

12:37 , Alex Young

6min: A poor corner by City’s standards. It’s played short to Grealish, who lays it back to Gundogan to float a hanging cross to the back post which Newcastle clear.

12:35 , Alex Young

5min: Grealish takes on Trippier once and then twice, the second time finding Akanji for a pop at goal which wins a corner.

12:35 , Alex Young

4min: Guardiola already animated on the touchline, in conversation with an assistant.

12:33 , Alex Young

3min: Newcastle are amped up. Barnes sees a shot closed down and then Gordon goes in late on Grealish.

12:32 , Alex Young

2min: Early foul from Bruno Guimaraes, a high boot on Lewis on the edge of the City early.

Newcastle have started on the front foot.

KICK-OFF!

12:31 , Alex Young

1min: Here we go!

12:30 , Alex Young

Haaland is averaging a goal every 44.9 minutes this season, and about four shots on target per game.

Newcastle have a very tough task to keep him quiet.

12:28 , Alex Young

It’s a glorious day in Newcastle, albeit with a slight nip in the air. Big flags across two stands for Gordon, who is set to sign a new contract with the club in the coming days.

12:25

Here come the teams.

12:16 , Alex Young

Not long to go until kick-off now. Both squads are back in their dressing rooms as AC/DC blare out of the PA system.

12:06

Man City may not have it all their own way today.

Newcastle have won six and drawn four of their last 10 home games.

Oh, but the last time to win at St James’ Park? City.

Pep Guardiola to TNT Sports on Rico Lewis being Rodri replacement

11:59 , Alex Young

"I don't know. Today, yes. Tomorrow? I don't know ... we have to [fill Rodri void] as a team."

Keeping everyone on their toes, as usual.

It’s great to see Darren Eales at SJP today.

The Newcastle CEO announced on Friday that he was stepping down after being diagnosed with bone cancer.

Anthony Gordon to TNT Sports on new contract

11:45 , Alex Young

"It's close. I am really excited.

“I will focus on that when it comes to it but I am really excited about today and just want to focus on that today.”

Isak and Rodri out, Murphy and Lewis in

11:35 , Alex Young

So, the big news for Newcastle is that Isak misses out with a broken toe. Jacob Murphy comes in and it appears Gordon will play centrally. Tonali comes in to beef up midfield.

City are without Rodri, as they will be for the remainder of the season, with Lewis given the nod in midfield alongside Kovacic. Grealish gets the nod over Savinho, Foden and Stones remain on the bench.

Eddie Howe reveals Newcastle conversations

11:10 , Alex Young

Eddie Howe said he had some honest conversations with his team after last week’s 3-1 defeat at Fulham.

Sixth-placed Newcastle suffered their first loss in the campaign at Craven Cottage last weekend and Howe said that led to an honest look at their shortcomings.

Newcastle's midweek League Cup fixture at AFC Wimbledon was rescheduled due to flooding at Wimbledon's home ground and the postponement gave them some valuable extra time to train.

"We've had two really good days where we've gone to work with the team to try and solve some of the issues from the Fulham game," Howe told reporters on Friday.

"We reviewed and we didn't like ourselves. Some honest conversations this week and hopefully a response... that internal reflection can be really healthy.

“We have to carry a threat. We have to be an attacking force, brave with the ball as well.”

Team news to come in about 20 minutes. No surprises that Haaland starts, and it sounds like Lewis joins him in the starting lineup.

Pep vs Arteta

10:38 , Alex Young

As another Premier League weekend begins, we must highlight a brewing war of words between Pep Guardiola and Arsenal rival Mikel Arteta.

The Man City manager has also called on Arteta to explain himself after cryptic comments about City claiming that he had "all the information" about the champions.

The Premier League title rivals played out an absorbing 2-2 draw on Sunday that ended with heated exchanges after John Stones snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.

A fired-up Erling Haaland was in thick of the arguments after throwing the ball at Arsenal defender Gabriel's head and then barging into Thomas Partey.

Guardiola said he did not condone the actions of his star striker but could understand them, highlighting a growing antipathy between the two sides.

He said: "I would say that sometimes the emotions are so there. Gabriel said it perfectly after the match, so this is a war, we are here to provoke the opponent, to push them.

"At the end what can you do? OK, you provoke me - I'm there. You want a war? I'll do a war.”

Newcastle vs Man City prediction

10:29 , Alex Young

It’ll be fascinating to see how Guardiola replaces Rodri but given how underwhelming Newcastle have been, City should still have enough.

Haaland will be licking his lips at the prospect of taking on another weak defence. This game could be over at half-time if Newcastle’s recent performances are anything to go by.

Rodri will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday: "He had surgery this morning - ACL and some meniscus. So, next season he will be here. This season is over (for him)."

Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb remain on the sidelines.

Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out too, with Pep Guardiola hopeful that the Belgian can return before the international break.

Newcastle team news

10:12 , Alex Young

Alexander Isak is a major doubt due to a broken toe, while could see Anthony Gordon start up front through the middle with fellow striker Callum Wilson eternally injured.

Eddie Howe said on Friday: "He'll be a doubt for tomorrow. He's had scans, he's had lots of tests. The injury has been diagnosed fine, there's no issues there.

"It sounds worse than it is, but he's got a broken toe, but it's one that can be managed and played with providing he can tolerate the pain levels, and that will have no long-term risks.

"He had an injection to numb the toe last week and that was fine until the injection wore off. Let's see how he is today."

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term absentees, and Lewis Miley also won’t feature.

Welcome

09:59 , Alex Young

Good morning and welcome to the Standard’s LIVE coverage of the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Manchester City.

On paper this looks like a tough test for the champions - and could well still be without Rodri - but Newcastle have rarely impressed so far this season and City are brushing aside (almost) everyone.

Eddie Howe will have his team raring for this early kick-off as they look to beat City in the league for the first time in five years - that’s a run dating back 10 games.

Erling Haaland to add to his 10 goals scored? You wouldn’t bet against it. Kick-off is at 12.30pm BST.
