NEWPORT City finished the year with back-to-back wins – and added to Cwmbran Celtic’s relegation fears in Cymru South.

The Steelmen edged a 1-0 win at Avondale Motor Park Arena despite being reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Luke Cooper was shown red.

Lathan Garrett came up with the key goal in the 72nd minute as Newport held on to back up their pre-Chrismas win against Caerau Ely.

After a testing autumn, the derby win lifts them up to seventh in the table while Celtic remain bottom, three points from safety.

Trethomas Bluebirds are setting the pace – at least until this evening - thanks to an impressive 3-0 win against Carmarthen in Ystrad Mynach.

Mark Dunford’s side led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals by Kallum Thomas and Callum Huggins, then Jack Jones finished with a flourish in added time.

Victory lifted them from third to top but Llanelli will finish the year as leaders if they beat Baglan Dragons at Stebonheath Park this evening.

Trethomas take on Newport at Spytty Park on Friday when they will hunt a double after edging a dramatic game 2-1 in Ystrad Mynach thanks to a pair of late free-kicks while Celtic travel to Caerau Ely.
