Newport vs Manchester United LIVE! FA Cup result, match stream and latest updates today

Newport vs Manchester United LIVE!

Manchester United survived a major scare as Antony's first goal of the season gave them a 4-2 win over Newport in the FA Cup. Erik ten Hag's side made a strong start to the fourth-round match against League Two opposition, as goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put them in charge inside 13 minutes.

But Newport responded admirably, halving the deficit before half-time through Bryn Morris and Will Evans then struck shortly after the break to equalise and spark real hope among the home fans of a monumental cup upset. United restored their lead through, midway through the second-half, as Antony converted after Luke Shaw's strike had hit the post. Rasmus Hojlund put the match to bed late on, and the Premier League side will travel to face either Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the fifth round.

It is a competition that represents United's only hope of finishing the season with some silverware, but the build-up to the match was largely dominated by talk of Marcus Rashford's absence, with the forward missing the match due to illness, having been absent from training on Friday just hours after reportedly attending a nightclub in Belfast. There was no sign of United being distracted though.

Newport vs Man Utd updates

  • GOAL! Antony restores lead for Man United

  • GOAL! Evans levels match up

Newport 2-3 Man United

Both Casemiro and Shaw had impressive games, them being back to fitness is a real boost for United.

Newport 2-3 Man United

18:09 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Newport opt not to take a long throw into the box, they go short and work the space for a cross instead.

Newport 2-3 Man United

18:06 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Fernandes swings in a corner, Townsend off his line really well to claim.

Still plenty of time for Newport. Feels like they have tired slightly, not quite that same energy when they do win the ball back.

Newport 2-3 Man United

18:03 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Yet another wonderful block from Delaney!

Hojlund opts not to shoot, lays it off to Fernandes and his strike is met by the Newport defender. That was flying in.

Newport 2-3 Man United

18:01 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Really late challenge from Casemiro, keen to stop the threat of a Newport counter.

Yellow card and he doesn't bother trying to complain about that.

GOAL! Newport 2-3 Man United | Antony 68'

17:58 , Matt Verri

The visitors are back in front!

Shaw with a great effort, smacks off the post and Antony is on hand to convert the rebound.

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:56 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Townsend fine to continue. Ten Hag keen to point out that time will need to be added on.

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:49 , Matt Verri

60 mins: McLoughlin fouled by Shaw, Newport with another chance to test this United defence. Such a good spell this, from the hosts.

Morris standing over the ball. United holding their line on the edge of the penalty area.

Not a great ball in, Charsley has to halt his run as he volleys well wide.

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:46 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Lovely Newport move, ends with Dalot charging down Lewis' cross. This is going to be flung into the box.

It's flicked on, big handball appeals are waved away.

Newport stay on the attack, ball stood up and Delaney's header is saved by Bayindir. Newport on the charge!

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:44 , Matt Verri

55 mins: Brilliant from Antony, skips into space on the byline and just about keeps the ball in play.

Picks out Hojlund, he lays it off to Fernandes and Townsend produces a big save to deny the United captain!

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:42 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Plenty of the ball for United, Newport need to be careful they don't drop deeper and deeper. A long, long time left.

Ball in behind, Delaney hacks it away for a corner with Fernandes on the scene.

Newport 2-2 Man United

17:39 , Matt Verri

50 mins: United win a free-kick out wide. Ten Hag looks a bit stunned on the touchline, his side are rattled.

Ball in, falls for Garnacho and Delaney once again launches himself in front of the shot to block.

GOAL! Newport 2-2 Man United | Will Evans 47'

17:37 , Matt Verri

IT'S ALL SQUARE!

Ball lumped forward and Newport hold it up really well.

Played out to the left wing, low ball into the middle and Evans is there at the near post to provide the finish.

Newport 1-2 Man United

17:36 , Matt Verri

46 mins: United straight on the front foot.

Hojlund unable to get on the end of a cross, ball falls for Antony and he goes for the overhead kick. Ball loops well over the bar.

Back underway!

17:34 , Matt Verri

Up and running for the second-half!

Superb start from Man United

17:31 , Matt Verri

After Fernandes opened the scoring for United, Mainoo then doubled the advantage inside 13 minutes.

That feels quite a while ago now though...

First-half stats...

17:27 , Matt Verri

Man United have had 75% of the ball in the match, with nine shots and four on target. They could easily have scored three or four goals in that opening 20 minutes.

Newport have come into the match though, with three shots on target themselves. One of those of course that crucial Morris goal.

Turning point in the half!

17:22 , Matt Verri

This is the goal that gave Newport that belief they were beginning to lack. Brilliant strike, even if it did take a deflection.

HT: Newport 1-2 Man United

17:19 , Matt Verri

And that's half-time, as Fernandes has a shot parried away.

United flew out of the blocks, went 2-0 up through goals from Fernandes and Mainoo, and could easily have had a couple of more.

But Morris has got Newport right back in it, big 45 minutes ahead after the break.x

Newport 1-2 Man United

17:17 , Matt Verri

45 mins: That left side has been a real threat for United, Fernandes away this time. It's a really poor ball into the middle though, over everyone.

Two minutes added on.

Newport 1-2 Man United

17:13 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Shaw handballs it out wide, free-kick in a great position for Newport.

They try something clever, cut back to Morris on the edge of the box and his scuffed effort is blocked.

Newport 1-2 Man United

17:11 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Well that's got the crowd going again.

Newport will be happy enough to get to half-time like it is, have to make sure they don't fall two-goals behind again going into the break.

GOAL! Newport 1-2 Man United | Bryn Morris 37'

17:08 , Matt Verri

STUNNING!

And now we really do have a game.

Morris must be more than 25 yards out, bouncing ball and he has smacked it in off the post!

Took a slight deflection off Martinez's head.

Newport 0-2 Man United

17:05 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Garnacho wants a penalty, thinks he was caught as the ball dropped from a corner.

Referee waves him on, no VAR to come to Garnacho's rescue. Looks like there was some contact.

Newport 0-2 Man United

17:03 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Antony cuts inside onto his left foot, just for a change. Shot from the edge of the area is tipped over for a corner.

He has another effort at goal from that, as the ball comes to him at the back post. Again onto his left, shot deflected wide.

Newport 0-2 Man United

17:01 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Sensational block!

United looked certain to score. Garnacho at the back post cuts it back perfectly into Antony's path, who is running onto it. First time, left foot... Delaney throws himself in the way to block.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:59 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Bennett with a very obvious tug on Dalot's shirt, chance for the United centre-backs to come up.

Fernandes whips it in, or that was the plan. Ball in is blocked and United are forced all the way back into their own half.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:56 , Matt Verri

25 mins: Better from Newport, getting the ball forward and bodies in the United box.

Evans initially tries to hook the ball into the middle, bounces off Martines and back at his feet. Drills an effort straight at the goalkeeper.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:54 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Casemiro bundles into Charsley, gives away the free-kick in midfield. Again it's a high line from United.

Morris towards the back post, Shaw is there to flick a header away.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:50 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Great ball from Martinez, Garnacho is in again.

He has Fernandes and Hojlund waiting for a tap-in in the middle, but goes for goal himself and hammers an effort against the bar!

Fernandes is absolutely furious.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:48 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Trouble for Newport again, as Garnacho is played into space on the left.

Into the box, onto his right foot but the shot is blocked. United look like scoring with every attack.

Newport 0-2 Man United

16:46 , Matt Verri

15 mins: First corner of the match for Newport, they could really do with a quick response.

Poor delivery though, doesn't beat Fernandes at the near post.

GOAL! Newport 0-2 Man United | Kobbie Mainoo 13'

16:44 , Matt Verri

It is two now!

Dalot charging away down the right, drives into the box and cuts it back for Mainoo, who sweeps a finish into the bottom corner.

Newport 0-1 Man United

16:42 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Should really be 2-0, United are looking sharp.

Fernandes and Dalot combine nicely, before Antony is picked out. On his left foot, looks to curl it into the far corner but it's well over the bar.

Newport 0-1 Man United

16:41 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Antony may well have been offside in the build-up, judging by the replays. No VAR this afternoon though.

It's all gone a bit quiet at Rodney Parade now. Perfect start for United.

GOAL! Newport 0-1 Man United | Bruno Fernandes 7'

16:38 , Matt Verri

Ruthless!

One chance, one goal. Antony played in down the left, he cuts it back perfectly for Fernandes and the United captain lashes in a brilliant first-time finish.

Newport 0-0 Man United

16:36 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Casemiro shoves Charsley as he jumps for a header, Newport win a free-kick just inside the United half. Up come the defenders.

Morris with a decent delivery, Garnacho hacks it away though. Comes back in, Dalot this time with the header. Decent start this from the hosts.

Newport 0-0 Man United

16:34 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Fairly scrappy start to the match, that will suit Newport just fine.

Martinez clips a long ball forward, picks out Garnacho in space but he's closed down and the hosts can clear.

KICK-OFF!

16:31 , Matt Verri

Up and running at Rodney Parade!

Here we go!

16:28 , Matt Verri

The players are out onto the pitch, greeted with a huge roar.

There's unlikely to be anything too subtle about Newport's approach. They'll get the ball forward as quickly as possible, and look to make this as uncomfortable for United as they can.

Not long now!

16:22 , Matt Verri

Just under ten minutes to go until kick-off...

Ten Hag on Rashford missing out

16:17 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag has been asked about Marcus Rashford's absence, ahead of kick-off.

"It's an internal matter," was his blunt response.

Feels like a situation that we could be hearing plenty more about in the days ahead.

Newport in strong form

16:10 , Matt Verri

Newport sit 16th in League Two, but they are on a seven-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

The club began their FA Cup run with victory over Oldham, and have since needed replays to get past Barnet and then Eastleigh.

Crowd are going to be up for it!

16:05 , Matt Verri

Going to be a real test for Man United this afternoon. What Erik ten Hag would give for an early goal to kill the atmosphere...

FA Cup draw in full

15:58 , Matt Verri

FA Cup holders Manchester City are heading to Luton in the FA Cup fifth round as both Chelsea and Liverpool will have home ties should they navigate the fourth round successfully.

Chelsea must first beat Aston Villa after a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Friday before a potential home clash with Leeds or Plymouth, while Liverpool will face Watford or Southampton should they beat Norwich.

Manchester United will head to Bristol City or Nottingham Forest should they beat Newport.

Maidstone, the only non-League team left in the draw, will face the winner of Sheffield Wednesday vs Coventry City replay.

Ten Hag: Our mentality must be right

15:51 , Matt Verri

Erik ten Hag insists Man United are prepared for a side in Newport who will throw everything at pulling off a huge upset.

"I think we have the experience often to go into an opposition who play their biggest game," the United boss said.

"I think exactly every game against them, they want so much to win more than against any other opponent. So that attitude from the opposition, that is usual for us.

"But it's not about them. It's about us. If we show the right mentality there, it's all about that.”

Strong United side!

15:42 , Matt Verri

No messing around from Erik ten Hag, he goes with a pretty much full-strength side.

Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro are all fit to start after their injury problems, while Rasmus Hojlund leads the line as expected.

A debut for Altay Bayindir in goal - big chance for him to impress before Andre Onana's return from AFCON.

Ten Hag is sure to get asked about Marcus Rashford after the match. He misses out this afternoon with illness, according to the club, though there has been footage doing the rounds of him in a Belfast nightclub on Thursday night, hours before he missed training due to sickness.

Fifth-round draw

Newport or Manchester United will travel to face Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the fifth round.

That's the prize on offer this afternoon.

Guardiola responds to Berrada departure

15:24 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has joked Manchester United should name a stand after Omar Berrada if their incoming chief executive proves to have the magic touch.

Berrada quit his role as chief football operations officer at rivals Manchester City last weekend after being offered the senior position at Old Trafford.

The appointment is a major coup for United with Berrada having been a key off-field part of City's recent triumphs, but Guardiola has warned that his fellow Spaniard is no instant guarantee of success.

The City manager said: "Obviously his knowledge goes to United, that's the reality.

"When you buy a player from another club you buy the knowledge that this player has had in the past with other managers and team-mates. That is normal. We learned a lot from Omar and he's learned a lot from the club, and now he's gone to United.

"But Kevin De Bruyne is still in Man City, De Bruyne will play here. Erling Haaland will play here, so in the end it's not that simple. Otherwise, with the power of United, they would have done it before.

" I don't know if by doing this (clicks his fingers) everything is going to be sorted and it works.

"If it does happen then, oh my God, they have to make a stand for Omar Berrada in the future because he'd deserve it."

Conditions look perfect in Wales, going to get some sun this afternoon...

Man United confirm Martial surgery

15:07 , Matt Verri

Anthony Martial will miss ten weeks of action after an operation on the Manchester United striker's groin injury.

Out of contract in the summer, time is running out for the Frenchman to save his Old Trafford career amid reports the club will not activate a 12-month option to extend his stay.

Martial has been absent since mid-December, initially due to illness before it was revealed he had suffered an injury to his groin.

On Wednesday, United announced that the 28-year-old had undergone surgery to address the issue, placing a ten-week timeframe for his return.

A statement read: "We wish Anthony a speedy recovery and look forward to his return."

However, Martial will have only a handful of games to convince the Red Devils to hand him a new contract - or impress a potential new club - once he returns.

Humble surroundings for Man United this afternoon...

Standard Sport prediction

14:52 , Matt Verri

While Newport have pulled off big results in cup competitions over the past few years, it would be a major shock not to see United win comfortably this afternoon.

Man Utd to win, 3-1.

FA Cup draw delayed

14:43 , Matt Verri

The fifth-round draw was set to take place around 30 minutes ago, but that has been pushed back.

Crowd trouble in the West Brom-Wolves match earlier today forced that match to be suspended, and meant there was not time for the draw to take place ahead of Liverpool's match with Norwich.

It will instead be held at half-time of that game, at about 3:15pm GMT.

Rashford not involved

14:35 , Matt Verri

A fresh update on the Man United team news front - Marcus Rashford will not be involved this afternoon.

The club have just confirmed that the forward has not recovered from illness in time to feature.

A statement said: “Marcus Rashford not well enough to be in the squad for Newport following illness; he has stayed at Carrington to train as he recovers.”

Man United team news

14:28 , Matt Verri

Manchester United should start with both Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw.

Shaw joined England colleague Harry Maguire in returning to training at Carrington ahead of the fourth-round trip to south Wales, before which Man Utd enjoyed a fortnight off for their winter break.

Argentine defender Martinez and Casemiro are both set to be in contention having made the bench for the 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier this month.

With Andre Onana and Sofyan Amrabat reaching the Africa Cup of Nations knockouts, Ten Hag will hand goalkeeper Altay Bayindir a long-awaited debut after joining United last summer.

"He's waited for his chance but he is experienced, he played in a big club in Turkey under big pressure, he knows how to deal with it," Ten Hag said of Bayindir at his pre-match press conference.

"So we are looking forward to Sunday. Altay is waiting for this moment and this is his moment."

Predicted Man Utd XI (4-2-3-1): Bayindir; Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Garnacho, Fernandes, Antony; Hojlund
