19 crews gathered at Neyland Yacht Club for the third weekend of the Frostbite Series.

The fourth race of the series started promptly at 10.30am on January 19.

The fleet faced challenging conditions as a drop in wind pressure impacted progress.

The 29er crewed by Keira E and Simon T took an early lead, but the Dart 18, sailed by Alan G and Dimitri C, found better conditions and passed the 29er halfway up the first stretch.

The course was shortened to one lap due to the patchy breeze, making it difficult for some boats to make headway against the tide.

Keira E and Simon T finished ahead, but on corrected time, Ross P in a Solution took the win, with Jon N in an ILCA 7 second, and the 29er third.

In Division 2, Anwen S stayed ahead of Liam F in their RS Tera Pro’s, followed by Isabelle N in her RS Tera Sport and Dylan W in his ILCA 4.

In the second race of the day, the course was adjusted to run along the Neyland shore to help the fleet cope with the increased outgoing tidal flow.

Anwen S claimed the pin end on the start signal, but found herself battling both breeze and tide.

Those closer to shore were protected from the tide but had less wind, while the boats in the middle had a balance of both, with Jon N in his ILCA 7 leading.

The fleet struggled to round the first mark due to the extended lull in the wind, with the leading four boats sailing far ahead of the pack.

However, they too became becalmed and were taken backwards by the tide.

The fleet regrouped shoreside of the windward mark, waiting for the wind to pick up again.

Once it did, the Supernova was the first to round, having to perform a 360° turn to exonerate himself after touching the mark broadside.

The fleet, now bunched up, rounded in close formation to finish the second shortened race of the day.

Ross P in the Solution took first in Division 1, followed by Alec D in an ILCA 6, and Geoff T in a Supernova.

In Division 2, Anwen S in an RS Tera Pro took first, followed by Dylan W in an ILCA 4, and Liam F in an RS Tera Pro.

As the fleet returned to shore, a steady force 3 wind filled in, enticing both catamarans and a Moth to stay afloat and zip around for another 20 minutes until they too were beckoned by the call of warm food from the clubhouse.

The Frostbite Series will continue, with all eyes on the weather for the next set of races.
