Carlisle City’s hopes of making history in the FA Vase were ended with defeat at Crook Town.

City had been hoping to reach the fourth round of the competition for the first time ever.

But Dan Kirkup’s side were knocked out of the competition with a 2-0 defeat in the third round in County Durham and had two players sent off to boot.

The rearranged clash between respective Northern League Division One sides was level at the break.

But a penalty enabled Crook to get in front through Craig Moody just after the hour mark.

And a late Josh MacDonald strike sealed victory for the hosts in front of a crowd of 262 at the Sir Tom Cowie Millfield.

City also had both Jake Simpson and Tom Mahone sent off in their defeat.

City are now left to focus on their league campaign, with Kirkup’s side sitting 17th after their first 24 games, and the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup, where they are due to host Workington Reds in the quarter-finals. Their next game is at home to Whickham in the league next Saturday.

Reds also suffered defeat in their latest Northern Premier League Premier Division outing against Warrington Rylands.

Mark Fell’s side went down to a 2-1 defeat at The Hive Arena.

Matthew Regan gave the hosts a first-half lead before Matty Clarke equalised for Reds.

But Jake Burton restored Rylands’ lead and then Reds top scorer Steven Rigg had a penalty saved.

The defeat leaves Workington 13th in the table with a trip to Fell’s former club Lancaster City next Saturday.

Penrith, meanwhile, were beaten in a Cumbrian derby on Friday night as Kendal Town got the better of things in their Northern League Division One clash.

Darren Edmondson’s side lost 4-2 in south Cumbria in front of a 546 crowd.

Luke Hunter put Penrith ahead but Kendal responded with goals from Niall Cowperthwaite, Josh Winder, Tom Kilifin and James Craig, before Hunter grabbed a late consolation.

Penrith sit 14th in the table and next face Guisborough Town at home next Saturday, while Kendal are now eighth ahead of next weekend’s trip to Tow Law Town.
