Nintendo Switch 2 feature fixes massive design flaw of original console
Nintendo has finally revealed the Switch 2, with a slightly redesigned console and some big updates to the controllers. However, there's one particular new feature that fixes an incredible annoying flaw of the original console.
The feature in question is a second USB-C port at the top of the device, situated next to the headphone jack. It might look like a small update, but it's a big deal for those who use the console primarily in handheld mode.
Having a dedicated charging port on the top now means that it's much more convenient to charge the device while still playing it outside of the dock. On the first console, the only charging port was located on the bottom of the device, which makes the device incredibly awkward to hold while trying to charge and play at the same time.

That seems to be fixed with the design of the Nintendo Switch 2, though. Now, it seems that players will have the choice to either use the charging port at the bottom for when playing using the included dock, or the one at the top while playing on the go.
The original console was intended to be used as a portable device, but the flimsy stand and awkward port location made this tricky. Nintendo is clearly trying to encourage portable play this time around, with the Switch 2 also featuring a stand that spans the entire length of the device and can be adjusted to multiple angles.
Dual USB-C ports have been cropping up on portable PC devices like the ROG Ally for a couple of years now, and it seems that Nintendo has taken note. Users on Reddit have also been requesting the feature for a few months now, with someone writing on the r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit explaining that: "The inconvenience of plugging in USB devices while in tabletop mode or while charging in handheld mode is removed without weakening the docked experience."
Some users were adamant that Nintendo would ever bother to include a second USB port, claiming that it's a feature solely useful for handheld PCs. "I would love a 2nd USB port, but I'm sceptical Nintendo would ever do it. For Switch 2 it would be a cost that really enables nothing more than some convenience, which isn't Nintendo's style," they write.
Clearly, Nintendo has proven the world wrong on this occasion, opting to include a much-welcome quality-of-life feature over cost cutting. It remains to be seen whether this has an impact on the overall price of the console, though, which doesn't currently have a confirmed price tag attached.
We'll learn more about the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 4, 2025. The console maker has scheduled a Direct livestream, where we'll likely learn about the price, release date, and games set to release alongside.
