Watford head to Burnley having switched successfully to a flat back-four last weekend, but Tom Cleverley was giving no clues today as to whether he would stick or twist in terms of his team’s formation.

The Hornets head north full of confidence having ended the 12-game unbeaten run of West Bromwich Albion at Vicarage Road on Sunday.

It was a match that saw them divert from the three-man backline they have played for most of the season, but Cleverley played his cards close to his chest when talking to the media earlier today.

“I thought our performance last week was very good but you’ll have to wait and see what we do on Saturday,” he said.

“It gives us two options now, to play a back three or a back four.

“I’m the type of person who will change in game, or change from game to game, depending on what I think will give us an edge.

“I’m not giving anything away but I was very pleased with how the back four worked.”

Cleverley admitted it was a tough call as to what his central defensive pairing would be on Sunday.

“It was a really close decision because I feel all three have had good seasons,” he said.

“Mattie has been probably our most consistent player this season and he is able to play on the left-hand side.

“Ryan has good athletic ability, he’s hitting his best form after having a dip earlier in the season and he’s done well to work himself out of the that.

“Francisco is Mr Reliable, and it was really close – but the other two just shaded it."

One big positive is that the Hornets are heading into the Christmas period with an almost fully fit squad – quite a contrast to a couple of years ago when it was around this time they had 14 players out of action for one reason or another.

“I’ve got to give credit to our medical and performance teams for having a very full squad to choose from,” said Cleverley.

“We know we’re going to be stretched over the next 25 to 30 days, and that’s the nature of the beast over this period.

“But to go into this period with only one or two injuries is good news.”
