‘There’s no other way’ – Boss hails County’s style in stunning 6-3 win at Parade
NEWPORT County AFC boss Nelson Jardim declared ‘there is no second way’ after his side romped to a stunning 6-3 win against Milton Keynes Dons at Rodney Parade.
The Exiles thumped the League Two promotion hopefuls in Newport thanks to hat-tricks by Bryn Morris and Bobby Kamwa.
They led 4-0 after 36 minutes after Morris scored a screamer, struck from a rebound and then, after Kamwa’s first cool finish, slotted a penalty.
The Dons scored in first-half added time through Luke Offord but then Kamwa made it 5-1 with a delicate lob soon after the restart.
MK caused some nerves with a quickfire double from Joe White and Offord to make it 5-3 with 15 minutes to go but winger Kamwa’s third sealed the spoils in the 81st minute.
It was a remarkable game in which the Exiles went toe-to-toe with one of the fourth tier’s best passing and attacking sides.
Jardim was brought in by new owner Huw Jenkins to develop a possession-based style and, after battling displays on the road to earn points at Notts County, AFC Wimbledon and Colchester, this was a taste of what he hopes is to come.
“When you see football the way it should be played, that happens,” said the head coach, who dedicated the win to his wife Ana and children Francisco and Carolina who were in the ground.
“When you look after the ball and try to play in a positive manner then it’s an entertaining afternoon with a lot of goals.
“It won’t happen every time but I will try to make sure the fans enjoy it when they come here and they are proud of their club, players and city.
“We have had good wins in the past but you want to see games like that, and it could only happen because the other team tried to play football.
“We are still growing and trying to find our way, I hope that there is much more to come and we have to keep our feet on the ground to improve.”
County haven’t dramatically changed their style since the departure of Graham Coughlan and a busy summer of recruitment.
Jardim has made no secret of his desire to get ‘comfortable’ in the table before pressing on with changes and they are now 16th, 11 points clear of the relegation zone and five off the play-offs.
“There is no second way, there is no second plan,” declared Jardim. “We have to be a team like that with a good spirit, possession-based, creating goal-scoring chances with movement.
“Sometimes there will be chances at both ends and we are disappointed to concede three goals, which we need to improve.
“But this is the football that every fans wants to see, sometimes it’s just not possible and this afternoon we were against a team also trying to bring value to the game.”
County face a very different challenge at Bromley on Boxing Day, then head to Walsall on December 29 before home encounters with AFC Wimbledon and Morecambe.
