NOMINATIONS are being invited for the 50th anniversary of an event honouring the stars of grass roots sport in the Darlington area.

Darlington Hippodrome will be the venue for the 50th anniversary of the Grand Final of the Darlington Sports Winners Scheme on the evening of July 8.

Brian Dobinson, chair of the organising committee, said: “To reach half a century is an amazing milestone and we wanted to celebrate the anniversary in a special way. We are, therefore, thrilled to announce that the 50th Grand Final will be held in the impressive setting of our magnificent local theatre.

“Darlington is so lucky to have a rich and varied grass roots sports scene, and we are proud to have been able to shine a spotlight on the talent and dedication in the local area over such a long time.

“Nominations are now open, with categories covering all age ranges, so please get in touch to tell us who deserves to part of this very special celebration.”

As well as VIP guests on the night, the event will also feature video messages from sporting celebrities.

Headline sponsor of the event is Woodlands Hospital, which opened in the town in 2001, and is part of the Circle Health Group.

The hospital’s long-serving Executive Director, Debbie Dobbs, said: “We pride ourselves on being at the heart of the community, and it is a privilege to support an event with such a proud history, going back half a century.

“It promises to be a great night at Darlington Hippodrome, and we can’t wait to see the nominations coming through.”

Other sponsors are: Darlington Hippodrome, West End Marketing, Darlington Rotary, Tom Craddock Football Academy, Darlington Town Twinning Association, and Darlington Move More Team.
