Norfolk tennis star wins 10th Grand Slam title with Australian Open victory
Norfolk’s Alfie Hewett triumphed in the men’s wheelchair final at the Australian Open, securing his 10th Grand Slam singles title.
Norwich-born Hewett beat world No.1 Tokito Oda with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 win in the final held in Melbourne Park’s Kia Arena today.
This victory marks Hewett’s second Australian Open singles title in three years and completes a remarkable double, having also won his sixth consecutive doubles title with Gordon Reid on Friday.
The 27-year-old now boasts an impressive 32 Grand Slam titles across singles and doubles.
In an hour-and-36-minute battle on Melbourne Park’s Kia Arena, Hewett broke Oda’s serve four times, converting his fourth match point to claim victory.

Hewett said: "It’s a really good start to the year.
"My coach has labelled this as bigger than Wimbledon and in some ways I agree. Wimbledon was special for its own reasons and I don’t need to go into that.
"But for this as the next step, it gives me a lot of belief in the process, in the team around me and the sacrifices I’m making and that I can now kick on and take it to another level.”
Hewett credited his breakthrough at the Paris 2024 Paralympic gold medal match against Oda for the mental strength needed to defeat the Japanese star.
"The Paralympics was a complete turning curve for me,” he explained. "I pushed him to the limit and was finally able to play my brand of tennis. That final will always be a massive turning point for me and my belief and today that showed."
The Brit’s relentless pressure proved decisive in Saturday’s final. Hewett broke Oda’s serve for a 5-3 lead in the first set and raced to a 3-0 lead in the second, showcasing an exemplary performance that forced the defending champion into crucial errors.
This win cements Hewett’s position among the sport’s all-time greats, following his first Wimbledon singles crown last July.
