A Premier League title this season for Nottingham Forest? Certainly every fan in the East Midlands would have laughed at the notion at the start of the season - but now?

It's not such a ludicrous notion after all with Nuno Espirito Santo's team registering six wins on the bounce and edging within six points of league leaders Liverpool.

Forest travelled across from the east to the west Midlands to face Nuno Espirito Santo's former club, hoping to capitalise on Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all dropping points this weekend in an unfolding dream top-four battle heading into a new calendar year.

As well as the manager, also returning to Molineux was Morgan Gibbs-White, and after an opening of boos and jeers from the home crowd, the 24-year-old hit the visitors into a seventh-minute lead.

We take a look at how the national media reported the win as the footballing world starts to take notice of the very real threat to the footballing hierarchy from the East Mids.

The BBC - 'Nuno could soon be talked about in a similar breath as Clough if he returns Forest to Europe's top table'

Forest fans are now daring to dream about a return to Europe for the first time since the 1995-96 season, with Champions League qualification now a realistic possibility. They are five points above fifth-placed Newcastle, six ahead of Manchester City. Forest's win at Wolves - which also featured goals from Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi and a terrific goalkeeping display by Matz Sels - came on the 50th anniversary of Brian Clough's appointment at the club.

The legendary manager turned Forest from a second division side into English champions in three years and followed that with successive European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980.

Nuno said: "It means a lot for us because Brian Clough is a legend of the club. You can see it all over Nottingham, in our stadium and in our training ground, references to Brian Clough. That can only inspire us.

"But we have to keep on going. Our happiness is based on how the players are working together; this is what makes us really proud and happy."

It was only fitting Nuno recognised the anniversary. Two Forest managers who could not be more different in their personalities but, while he has a long way to go, Nuno could soon be talked about in a similar breath as Clough if he returns Forest to Europe's top table.

Sky Sports - 'The masters of the counter-attack'

These are heady days for Nottingham Forest. The last time they won this many consecutive games in the top division they were champions of Europe.

There is a growing conviction that this current run of results is going to take them back there, spurred further by a 3-0 win against Wolves on Monday Night Football - their sixth successive Premier League victory.

They are doing it their way, averaging two points per game despite having less of the ball than any other team in the Premier League. Or should that be because they have less of the ball than any other team in the Premier League? The masters of the counter-attack.

Guardian - 'The ghosts of the past haunted Molineux'

Just as Wolves had started to dream of a brighter future under Vítor Pereira, it was the ghosts of the past that haunted Molineux as their former head coach Nuno Espírito Santo and academy product Morgan Gibbs-White snatched the points to send Nottingham Forest level with second-placed Arsenal.

Wolves were unbeaten under Pereira and the superior side for much of the match but as they saw chances come and go, while portraying Gibbs-White as a pantomime villain, it seemed inevitable what the outcome would be. Nuno took Wolves into Europe and is plotting the same trick with Forest after a sixth victory in a row, sealed by goals from Gibbs-White, Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Sun - Forest are going under the radar - and that is the way Nuno likes it

Nuno says nobody has yet asked him if Forest are title contenders. The likes of Chelsea and Arsenal are immediately seen as potential challengers to Liverpool when they move into second spot. But Forest are going under the radar - and that is the way Nuno likes it. This was the first time Forest had put together six top-flight wins in 58 years.

And a return to Europe is there for them on this form. But the Portuguese coach is not entertaining that sort of talk about a club that spent the last two seasons avoiding relegation.
