Nottingham Forest given green light for defender transfer with 'discussions to follow'
Nottingham Forest have received some good news in their pursuit of Atalanta outcast Ben Godfrey as the former Everton man is being allowed to leave the Italian club.
Recent reports suggested Godfrey's name was one mentioned at Forest as they look to bolster the defensive areas ahead of their push for a UEFA Champions League place this season. After moving to Serie A last summer for a reported £11 million, Godfrey has made just five appearances in all competitions, failing to make an impact in an Atalanta side who have been a force this season and are currently leading Italy's top tier.
As such, the 26-year-old is allegedly keen on a "change of scenery" and the Premier League could be a "priority". Forest face competition from Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and AS Roma who are all reportedly interested in the defender's signature.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has issued a fresh update regarding Godfrey's status at the Bergamo-based club. The Italian reporter said on X: "Former Everton defender Ben Godrey can leave Atalanta in January as he’s no longer key for their project. Discussions to follow as Godfrey is not even in squad list for Super Cup."
Previously of Everton and Norwich City, Godfrey would provide solid Premier League experience and versatility to the Forest back line. Primarily a centre back, he can also operate as a right back or even in centre midfield.
Nuno Espírito Santo's side are apparently being cautious in their approach to dealings this January in an effort to preserve the squad harmony and momentum amid any potential improvements.
Forest currently sit third in England's top division after an astounding first half of the season and have the third best defence in the league (19 conceded) after Arsenal and league-leaders Liverpool who have both conceded only 17.
