Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis given big boost as Andrea Radrizzani update emerges
Evangelos Marinakis has made no secret of his desire to expand his portfolio of clubs across the globe.
Indeed the Nottingham Forest owner, who also has Olympiacos in his stable of sporting operations, even spoke about the prospect of adding a Brazilian team to that list, recently telling Sky Sports : “There are discussions and what I can say is that whatever I want to get involved in needs to be something major. The tradition is very important and it always makes more sense to me to manage or to own.”
Vasco Da Gama are the club widely believed to be of interest to Marinakis, with the four-time Brazilian champions, expected to undergo a takeover.
The identity of the prospective new owner has been a subject of speculation, though, with many reporting Marinakis’ interest while some have suggested former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani was in advanced discussions.
Both men face other competition in the form of consortiums based in the USA and Saudi Arabia. Previously managed by 777 Partners, Vasco Da Gama's financial model fell apart earlier in 2024, leading the club's ownership to switch to the American insurance behemoth A-Cap. They are currently 12th in the Brazilian Serie A.
However, a report emerged earlier this week identifying Marinakis as the ‘leading candidate’ and there have been further claims from NewsColina, a Vasco Da Gama news portal, saying ‘Radrizzani is no longer in the running’.
That could suggest that Marinakis has a clearer run to securing the Rio de Janeiro-based club, with Edu hand-picked as the man to bring the owner’s sporting dreams into fruition.
