Nottingham Forest’s winning run came to an end as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their big Premier League clash with fellow title challengers Liverpool.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side went into the showdown on the banks of the Trent looking to do the double over the league leaders. And they got off to the perfect start by taking the lead with just eight minutes on the clock. Anthony Elanga played a delightful through-ball and Chris Wood guided it home for his 13th goal of the season.

It could have been 2-0 soon after that as Murillo wasn’t too far away with a long-range strike. The Brazilian did the business at the other end as half-time approached, though, thwarting Luis Diaz with a superb tackle.

With 66 minutes on the clock, though, the visitors levelled the scores. Substitute Diogo Jota headed in from a corner to make it 1-1. Goalkeeper Matz Sels then made a big save to thwart the Liverpool man from getting another one soon after while Ola Aina weighed in with a block on the line in the closing minutes.

Forest had to survive a nervy few minutes but came away with a point, even if their seven-match winning streak in all competitions was brought to an end. Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at the City Ground.

Matz Sels: Had been a relatively quiet evening for the Belgian until he had to pick the ball out of his net. Will be disappointed with that one but made some important stops to prevent further damage. Rating: 9/10

Ola Aina: Came to his team’s rescue with a brilliant last-ditch block on the line in the dying minutes. Summed up the full-back’s contribution on a big evening Trentside. He rarely puts a foot wrong. Rating: 9/10

Nikola Milenkovic: Mopped up so much at the back as Forest frustrated their opponents and kept them at bay for a long spell. A shame the evening didn’t end with another shut-out. Rating: 9/10

Murillo: Absolutely unreal. One of the best individual performances of the season so far. Would have been the cherry on the cake if the Reds had kept a clean-sheet and his first-half shot had gone in. Rating: 9.5/10

Neco Williams: Some shift by the Welshman, who did not stop working all evening. Coped very well with the threat the visitors posed and tried to push up when he could. Rating: 9/10

Ryan Yates: Felt like the kind of game made for the academy graduate and he did his best to get under the visitors’ skin. Second-half booking made it tricky for him. Rating: 8/10

Elliot Anderson: Terrific performance from the midfielder. Covered so much ground and was excellent at helping to shield the back four. A big contribution. Rating: 8.5/10

Anthony Elanga: Another game, another goal involvement from the wide man. Perfect pass to tee up Wood for the opener. Caused problems all evening with his rapid pace. Rating: 8.5/10

Morgan Gibbs-White: Not necessarily the England international’s most influential game but he gave everything for the cause. Still showed some lovely touches when he got the ball. Rating: 8/10

Callum Hudson-Odoi: Tried his luck with a trademark effort in the second half when he cut inside and let fly. Blocked on this occasion but one of several positive moments. Rating: 8.5/10

Chris Wood: Him again! Brilliant left-footed finish for his 13th of the campaign. Took it ever so well to get on the scoresheet for a third successive league game and put his team in front. Rating: 8.5/10

Subs

Nicolas Dominguez (for Yates, 76mins): Could consider himself unfortunate not to make the starting XI. Did his bit when he got the chance, though. Rating: 7/10

Jota Silva (for Hudson-Odoi, 83mins): Brought his usual energy to proceedings. Was much needed as most of his teammates were blowing late on. Rating: 7/10

Taiwo Awoniyi (for Wood, 89mins): Didn’t get long to make an impact. Some mixed touches during his time on the pitch. Rating: 6.5/10

Alex Moreno (for Williams, 89mins): Helped Forest clinch a big point by coming through seven minutes of added time. Faces a fight to get back into the XI, though. Rating: 7/10

Morato (for Gibbs-White, 89mins): Brought on to help see the game out. Continues to be trusted by Nuno to do the business in such moments. Rating: 7/10

Subs not used: Miguel, Ward-Prowse, Sosa, Boly.
