Nottingham Forest will hit the jackpot if they qualify for the Champions League, says former Reds striker Teddy Sheringham.

Forest are currently in third place in the Premier League behind only Liverpool and Arsenal. They are level on points with the second-placed Gunners, but trail Mikel Arteta’s side on goal difference.

It has been a great season at the City Ground so far, after two battles against relegation in the club’s first two seasons back in the top-flight, and Sheringham believes it would be an “incredible” achievement if Forest went on to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

There are huge riches available to clubs who qualify for the Champions League. This season, clubs received almost £16m for qualifying for the competition, earning an additional £1.8m for every win in its league phase. The prize money ramps up even more in the knockout phase. The total purse is a staggering £2 billion.

That kind of money would help owner Evangelos Marinakis take the club to yet another level and head coach Nuno Espirito Santo attract more top players.

Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Champions League odds, Sheringham said: “Nottingham Forest are surprising everyone and you get one team every season that pulls away from the pack and exceeds all expectations.

“They’ve done that for half a season and now they need to try and keep it going because getting back into Europe would be unbelievable.

“They are in a Champions League spot at the moment which would be incredible in bringing new finances and players to the club.”
