Nottingham Forest are seemingly ready to up the ante in the battle for Wolverhampton Wanderers ace Matheus Cunha.

The Reds are said to have the forward at the top of their transfer wish-list with little more than a week of the January window remaining. And the club are reportedly prepared to spend big in order to get him.

According to Sky Sports, Forest are “ready to make” a club record offer for Cunha. It is claimed a bid of around £60 million could be “enough to tempt” Wolves to sell, which would represent a huge outlay for the Reds.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest in the Brazil international. Manchester City also had the attacker on their radar but are closing on a deal for former Forest target Omar Marmoush.

Cunha is under contract at Molineux until 2027. Sky report he has been offered a new deal but is “unlikely” to sign it as things stand.

Strengthening head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s attacking resources is a priority for the Reds before the February 3 deadline. Striker Chris Wood is having a fantastic season but there is a question mark over whether Taiwo Awoniyi will still be at the City Ground come the end of the window.

West Ham United are keen on Awoniyi but Forest would not even consider sanctioning a move without bolstering their own options first. To that end, the club have already had a £22m bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa rebuffed.

Last summer, Elliot Anderson made a £35m switch from Newcastle United to link up with Nuno’s side but goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachidimos moved in the opposite direction for £20m as part of the package. Twelve months earlier, the Reds had signed midfielder Ibrahim Sangare for £30m from PSV.

Going further back, Morgan Gibbs-White cost Forest an initial £25m when he signed from Wolves in 2022 - with the potential for that to rise to £42m courtesy of various add-ons. Splashing out close to £60m for Cunha, therefore, would smash the Reds’ club record fee quite considerably.
